The event hotel
Welcome to the Third CWD Adventure!
This weekend event is for both families and college-age (young adult) CWD participants, who will stay at the New York Midtown East Courtyard by Marriott and share a weekend of sight-seeing and other outdoor and indoor activities. These activities might include visiting any number of New York City landmarks, taking a boat tour of the harbor, visiting the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), walking or taking a carriage ride through Central Park, and visiting the street markets and wonderful shops in New York. Activities will be weather and interest-dependent. There is a lot to do in the area – these are just a few ideas.
Prior to the weekend of the event, all registered participants will be contacted via email to discuss the options for each age group (and for families as a whole), what the weather looks like it will be doing (it can be plain old cold, or cold and windy, or cold/windy/snowy), and everyone's preferences. We are intentionally leaving the schedule pretty wide-open at this point, and we are open to ideas if you are familiar with the area and have an idea for an activity/outing with a particular age group.
The group will eat breakfast together on Saturday and Sunday at the hotel. This is included in registration. Lunch will likely be decided by age group, i.e., if the teens are in Chinatown, they will likely eat there. If the young adults are shopping on Fifth Avenue, they'll likely eat in a café along the way. For dinner, we may stay together or break into smaller groups to sample some of the best cuisine in the world! Lunch and dinner are not included in registration. Friday evening from 7:00-9:00, we will have a 'getting to know you' reception with snacks and some discussion about what the weekend will bring.
Who May Participate?
This weekend is intended for any age group – and we are hoping to have a significant young adult group as part of this event. We hope to provide a fun and healthy atmosphere, and to promote friendship, exercise, and excellent diabetes care. The minimum age for participants to stay by themselves in the hotel room is 18. Otherwise you need to have a parent or guardian with you. CWD staff for the event will include Natalie Bellini, Jim Vail, Laura Billetdeaux, Neal Billetdeaux, Jeff Hitchcock, and Chris Tull.
The Weekend Venue
The Marriott New York Midtown East Courtyard by Marriott is 'home' for the weekend. Located at 866 Third Avenue (the corner of 53rd and 3rd), this hotel features a wonderful location in the heart of some of the best shopping, eating, and touring in the world! The hotel is just a short walk to subway transportation and access to the rest of the city.
High speed internet access is available in all sleeping rooms. Wireless access is offered in the lounge of the hotel.
Rooms are $219 per night for a single or double. The cut-off date for the room block is January 26, 2007. However, CWD has only reserved 25 rooms for this event and we will likely sell out well before January. So please make your reservation before then! To reserve a room, call the hotel directly (do not call the main 800 Marriott number), 800-894-6380 or 212-644-1300. Remember to state that you are with the Children with Diabetes group. Please note that you do need to complete a CWD Registration Form for the weekend in addition to reserving a room. The registration is $100 per family – or $50 if you are coming by yourself - and is due before February 1. Links to download the registration form are below. Note that you must stay in the hotel as part of the room block in order to participate in the event. This event is intended to be a smallish gathering of families who will spend the weekend together getting to know each other, support each other, and learn all about New York City. We are hoping to have one afternoon or evening in which we are able to get together with other NYC families who would like to share more of their city with us. If you are a New Yorker and have ideas for what might be fun for a larger group of people, please contact Laura Billetdeaux with your ideas firstname.lastname@example.org.
See you in Manhattan!
Registration ancellations prior to January 16 will be refunded minus a $25 processing fee. After January 16, no refunds are available. You must contact the hotel separately to cancel your room reservation.
