Friday featured the addition of some brand-new sessions ‚Äď entirely in Spanish. Sponsored by Dexcom, Inc., Insulet Corporation, and Medtronic Latin America, the Spanish track offered in-depth education and support for our families who have Spanish as their native language. Our goal is to continue to provide a Spanish Track at Friends for Life Orlando each year to serve better our families.
Friday also featured research update sessions by the Diabetes Research Institute and JDRF, as well as some new sessions in our Diabetes 101 track, including ‚ÄúThe Best Care For Our Children: Communication, Emotional Support, and the Healthcare System‚ÄĚ by Tamara and Sean Oser. Crystal Woodward from the American Diabetes Association presented the Safe at School program, followed by a 504 Plan Workshop ‚Äď it was so good to have Crystal back with us at FFL. The Dads and Moms Discussion groups were held in their usual Friday afternoon time slots ‚Äď however, this year the moms gathered for laughter instead of discussion. Author, humorist, and PWD Trisha Porretti presented a session called ‚ÄėBolus, Eat, Laugh: A Session for Moms.‚Äô And laugh they did!
Author Andrew Deutscher, the closing keynote presenter and a returning faculty member, has a personal story to tell. And, in telling his story at the official close of the FFL educational program, he encouraged all of us to think about our own stories. And to think about the good and positive ‚Äď and empowering - things that the diabetes journey has brought into our lives.
Speaking of empowering ‚Äď the Teens headed off bright and early (very early) on Friday morning for their day at Epcot! Held every single year, this special teen day encourages the participants to put into practice all of the things they‚Äôve learned and talked about on Wednesday and Thursday at FFL, in the context of a day at the theme park. Accompanied by their teen program staff, including six medical staff, the teens had home base at the Odyssey Pavilion, and strict check-in guidelines throughout the day. They were otherwise free to enjoy the day, to make their own choices about lunches and snacks, and to deal with the additional challenges of heat and excitement. Many thanks to The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust for sponsoring this very special part of the teen program.
Friday evening was a whirlwind of social events ‚Äď something for everyone! The college-age crew ‚Äď both participants and youth program staff ‚Äď had a wonderful dinner together, with a presentation by Trisha Porretti which had everyone laughing. Thank you to Animas Corporation for sponsoring this very important opportunity for the young adult group to spend time together!
For the young and young-at-heart, Dexcom sponsored a Family Movie Night, featuring the film Zootopia. Dexcom handed out blankets, and there were pillows, popcorn, beverages ‚Äď and good friends. What could be better?
Tandem Diabetes Care once again sponsored the extremely popular Casino Night, a high energy and very fun evening for T1 adults and their friends. This event draws high praises year after year from those folks who like nothing better than spending an evening with best buddies, enjoying some great food, beverage, and music, and in general having a blast. Check out the photos!
Finally, Friday night closed with the Dessert and Posters with the Faculty, sponsored by Ascensia Diabetes Care, which was an opportunity for participants to meet the faculty and researchers face to face and learn about their work and research. This event always goes late into the evening, and we so appreciate the time that our FFL faculty take to answer questions and explain their work in detail. It is such a valuable learning experience because it offers the opportunity to ask about things presented earlier in the conference after one has had the opportunity to reflect and process ‚Äď it‚Äôs simply great follow-up.
