Wednesday was a packed day from start to finish, and every inch of our convention space at the Marriott World Center was in use!
It was a day of focus groups, screenings, discussion groups, and presentations. It was also a day of continued FFL ‘meet-ups’ and some fairly intensive age group staff training. The teen program got underway on Wednesday, as did the Diabetes Advocates MasterLab. The Grandparents program started with back to back sessions covering hands-on training and review of pumps, pens, Glucagon, meters, and continuous sensors. Sports Central was buzzing all day long, and there was always a crowd around the First Timers Welcome area!
The First Timers Orientation late Wednesday afternoon was the largest gathering of First Timers we’ve ever had at a Friends for Life conference! In fact, every seat was taken, and we had to bring in more tables! First Timers learned some of the history behind CWD and Friends for Life, and had the opportunity to meet and hear from some of the key staff, who shared their ideas on how to get the most out of the conference. Thank you to Dexcom for sponsoring this important part of FFL.
At 6:00 p.m. sharp, the Exhibit Hall was ready for the Grand Opening! Country musician Eric Paslay cut the ribbon with the help of a handful of young FFLs, and the Exhibit Hall was officially open. Following the wild rush of a couple thousand excited people anxious to get into the hall, it settled down to a steady, well-behaved and energetic large crowd all evening and throughout the next couple of days. The sponsors and exhibitors were absolutely wonderful, offering activities, goodies, and information for everyone, whatever age.
Wednesday evening closed with a very special treat – a concert by Eric Paslay. A Real Concert. Just like one you might see at home after going to extremes to get tickets. This one was just for us, though – for Friends for Life. Eric was amazing, and our families were thrilled. Thank you, Dexcom, for making this happen.
