Children with Diabetes (CWD) presents our Fourth Annual Friends for Life Canada conference! Join our international group of world-renowned clinicians, researchers, physicians, adults, children, and families with diabetes to learn the most current information in diabetes care. Attend educational sessions and get cutting-edge ideas for your family's diabetes management. Participate in parent discussion groups and find new, creative ways to help and motivate your children. Connect in-person with families you've met through the CWD online community. The Conference Venue and Reservations
The Marriott Toronto Downtown Eaton Centre is located at 525 Bay Street, Toronto,Ontario. This property is newly renovated and offers some wonderful space to CWD participants including plenty of meeting room accommodations for all age groups, an indoor swimming pool, several restaurants, a sports bar with big screen tvs, and a state of the art fitness center. Single and double room rates are CDN$174 per night plus tax. Each room offers high speed Internet, a 2-line phone with voice mail, cable TV, and a coffee maker with complimentary coffee. The Eaton Centre - a four-level mall with many fun shops and restaurants (and two food courts) - is connected via an enclosed walkway to the hotel.
To make your room reservation, you can register online or you must call the Marriott Toronto Downtown Eaton Centre directly at 800-905-0667. If you call, you must identify yourself as being with the CWD Friends for Life conference to be included in the CWD room block and to get the preferential group rate.
Reservations are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The room block will be held for CWD until February 28, 2013. Note that there is a conference registration fee per family and that reserving a room does not register you for the conference. Rates vary according to the date of registration. Please refer to the registration link below for details.
Family Registration is priced at US$200 through January 31, 2013 (Early Registration) and US$225 from February 1, 2013 through March 1, 2013. (Regular Registration). Each Family Registration includes up to two (2) adults and up to three (3) children under the age of 18. Additional related adults and children may be added to a family registration for an additional charge. Single adult professional pricing is US$100. Please note that we expect the conference to sell out and do not plan on having on-site registration.
Cancellations prior to February 1, 2013 will be refunded minus a US$50 processing fee. After February 1, 2013, no refunds are available.
The adult program is designed to run keynotes as well as 3-4 sessions simultaneously during Saturday and Sunday. There will also be two-day programming for school-age children (ages 6-9), tweens (ages 10-12), and teens (ages 13+). Full-day childcare is available for potty-trained children under age 6, by pre-registration only. Please note that all conference participants under the age of 18 must have a parent or adult guardian with them in the building during the entire conference (i.e., teens and children should not be dropped off to participate while parents go elsewhere). This is for health and liability reasons, and there will be no exceptions.
Youth Program Note
Please note that all children must be with their appropriate age group during sessions. The elementary program is for children ages 6-9; the tween program is for children ages 10-12, and the teen program is for ages 13-18. There is no 'skipping up' or 'skipping down.' This is per our insurance guidelines. No exceptions are allowed.

College student and Type 1 athlete Kyle Cochran wanted to show kids with Type 1 that it was possible to compete at the highest levels of physical challenge – and became an instant hero to the diabetes community in 2012 when he made his way into the finals of the televised obstacle course competition series, “American Ninja Warrior.” Sponsored by Animas Canada.
14-year-old athlete and diabetes advocate Megan Beamish from Halifax is Nova Scotia’s Bantam Female Athlete of the Year for track and field. She was the winner of the 2012 JDRF national video contest and traveled to Ottawa as co-chair of the “Kids for a Cure” lobby day. Megan hopes one day to compete at the Olympics, and to have a career as a Pediatric Endocrinologist. Sponsored by Animas Canada.
Michael Thornton is a 12-year-old soccer prodigy and diabetes advocate whose dream is to play professional soccer. Being the first Canadian to ever be invited to be a member of A.S. Roma’s Youth Academy (a professional club in Italy), and now trying out with some of the top soccer clubs in the world – Michael is well on his way to making his dream come true. At 9 years old, Hayden Simon was a AAA Baseball Provincial Champion in both 2011 & 2012 and spokesperson for type 1 diabetes. Hayden has organized diabetes events both at school and in his community while playing competitive hockey, basketball and baseball. His goal is play first base for the New York Yankees and do everything he can to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes.
