Back to 2004 Conference 2004 Conference Friday Program for Parents and Adults

Friday, July 16, 2004 Program for Parents and Adults

9:00 - 10:15 a.m.

MDI and Pumping: A Comparison
Presenter: Bruce Buckingham

Many questions exist regarding efficacy and outcomes of Multiple Daily Injections vs Insulin Pumping. Is one truly better than the other for achieving optimal blood glucose levels? Does age make a difference? Type of insulin? Join Dr. Buckingham for a discussion of the research to date.

Portion Distortion
Presenter: Mike Schurig

Portion sizes at restaurants are larger than ever nowadays. How in the world can a person with diabetes eat out and not fall prey to "portion distortion?" Come learn some fun and practical ways to combat the challenge.

Managing Diabetes in School
Presenter: Crystal Jackson

Children with diabetes spend a great deal of time in school and daycare. The federal regulations mandate that these facilities provide a safe environment. This session will discuss these issues and will briefly cover how to implement a care plan for a child with diabetes. There will be lots of time for questions and discussion, so please bring your thoughts and be ready to share!

Young Adults Discussion
Facilitators: Stefan Rubin, Lois Jovanovic

Young adults (18-25) face some very different challenges from kids, teens, and older adults. This discussion group is an open forum for young adults to bring their concerns and questions, and get input from others who are facing the same challenges or have walked that road before. Any question is fair game, so bring a cup of coffee and be ready for some great discussion!

10:15 - 10:45 a.m. Snack Break in the Ballroom Circle outdoors

10:45 - 12:00 noon

Advanced Pumping Concepts
Presenter: John Walsh

This presentation is for people who have been pumping at least several months and are comfortable with the basic concepts of pumping insulin. Learn how to maximize the functions of your insulin pump and how you utilize them to get the best control ever!

Sansum Research Update
Presenter: Lois Jovanovic

Join Dr. Jovanovic for an inside view on the research underway at the Sansum Research Institute in San Diego.

Understanding and Developing a 504 Plan
Presenter: Crystal Jackson

This is a follow-up presentation to Managing Diabetes in School. 504 Plans will be discussed in detail. You will learn how to write appropriate plans for your child and how to work with your school's administration to make sure the plan is being followed.

Transition from High School to College
Presenter: Craig Crease and Stefan Rubin

Throughout the school-age years, and even into high school, kids rely on their parents for a lot of support and structure with regard to diabetes management. And then they go to college. Whether that college is 5 minutes from home or across the country, it introduces a new set of responsibilities and, for the parent (and perhaps the student), worries. Will he remember to test often enough? How many carbs are in dorm food? Who will test her blood glucose in the middle of the night? Join our presenters to talk through some of these concerns and learn some strategies that work.

Stress Management for Adults
Presenters: Bob Bulgarelli and Betty Brackenridge

Ugh! There are just some days (actually, many of them) when a person needs to blow off steam or decompress because the stress levels get so high. Stress itself can be a leading cause of illness, and can cause other side effects such as migraines, elevated blood glucose levels, digestive problems, and elevated blood pressure to name just a few. Bob and Betty have some great suggestions for learning to control your response to stress. Join them... and have a stress-free afternoon!

12:00 noon - 1:30 p.m. Box Lunches in the tent outdoors

Special Lunch Discussion: Problem-Solving Infusion Set Concerns
Presenter: Natalie Bellini

This is an informal opportunity to discuss different infusion sets, the pros and cons of some of the more popular sets, and some common problem-solving scenarios that parents might encounter. Pick up your box lunch and come join us!

Special Lunch Discussion: Real Life MDI
Presenter: Bruce Buckingham

This is an informal opportunity to meet with some other parents and Dr. Buckingham to discuss the special challenges of managing diabetes with multiple daily injections. Bring your lunch and your questions!

1:30 - 2:45 p.m.

MDI/Insulin Pumps: Recess, Gym, and Sports
Presenter: Rick Philbin

Exercise presents some very different challenges to people with type 1 diabetes. Depending upon the intensity of exercise or whether the exercise is for fun or competition, a person's response can vary from having high blood glucose levels, to low blood glucose levels, to everything in between. How does a person manage this? Join Athletic Trainer Rick Philbin for a discussion of how to integrate exercise into your child's diabetes management, whether the exercise is simply recess or gym at school or your child is a competitive athlete.

Dad's Discussion Group
Facilitators: Tom Karlya, Neal Billetdeaux, Craig Crease, Lee Shekter

Back again by popular demand... the Dad's Hour! Whether you're new at diabetes or have been at this a long time, there is always good information to be shared in a forum like this. Join your facilitators for some great interaction. Dads only, please.

Sick Day Management
Presenter: Betty Brackenridge, Suresh Rao

Managing your child's diabetes on a 'sick day' can be an entirely different experience. What should you do with insulin dosage when your child is sick? What should you do if they won't eat or are vomiting? Should you push fluids? When should you worry? What constitutes an emergency? And what about ketones? Should you test urine ketones or blood ketones? Join us for a discussion of the options.

Legal Issues with Diabetes
Presenters: Michelle Rago, Crystal Jackson

Whether it happens in school, in the community, or on the job, people with diabetes may be on the recipient end of discrimination. Join attorney (and CWD mom) Michelle Rago and ADA's Manager of Legal Advocacy (and CWD mom) Crystal Jackson to discuss discrimination situations to watch out for and what to do about them. Bring questions for discussion.

2:45 - 3:15 p.m. Snack Break in the Ballroom Circle outdoors

3:15 - 4:30 p.m.

Real Life Pumping
Facilitator: Jeff Hitchcock

This session explores real-life pumping scenarios and problem-solving with a panel of experts, including representatives from each of the pump companies and noted insulin pump author John Walsh.

Mom's Discussion Group
Facilitators: Lauren Lanning and Betty Brackenridge

CWD moms have a lot to say. An hour is probably just enough time to barely scratch the surface of some really great topics, and we deliberately put this hour at the end of the conference schedule. Please come, meet some wonderful moms from all over the world, and feel free to continue these conversations into the Birds of a Feather sessions poolside and in the Suites rooms at 5:00 (refer to the 5:00 programming).

Diabetes in Kids Under 5
Presenter: Bruce Buckingham

Diabetes care for young children requires a very special approach. Join Dr. Buckingham for a discussion of some of the special diabetes management considerations required by this age group, as well as some of the things to consider as they approach preschool and kindergarten years.

Young Women and Diabetes
Presenter: Lois Jovanovic

Young women (18-30) face their own sets of issues, concerns, joys, and growing pains. Add type 1 diabetes to the mix and you have - well - a lot to talk about. This session is "by request" of young women who participated in the conference last year and wanted their own time to just sit down and share ideas with Dr. Jovanovic!
