Back to 2004 Conference Report Friends for Life 2004

Friends for Life: LA 2004 - Wednesday

Registration opened at noon on Wednesday, with Coordinator Julia 'Expect Me To Be Loud' Mattingly keeping an eye on things. Volunteers handed out registration packets, tickets for the banquet and Universal Studios, and conference t-shirts. Conference volunteers helped families throughout the day and were easy to spot with their bright purple shirts sporting "VOLUNTEER" on the back.

Focus Groups were held throughout the day, beginning at 9:00 a.m. and finishing up at 4:30. Families signed up for these groups months ahead of time in order to interact in a small group setting with some of our major sponsors, including LifeScan, Novo Nordisk, Animas, Smiths Medical MD, Inc., Medtronic MiniMed, and Unomedical a/s. Feedback from participants and sponsors alike was very positive.

The Quilt for Life was shown on Wednesday from noon to 9pm. After receiving several new quilt squares at the conference, 366 squares were on display. The squares filled the large Studio Suites Ballroom. Everyone who visited the quilt was encouraged to sign the signature square made by Pam Loebner. We have one signature square from each Children with Diabetes conference held since the quilt was first shown at the Friends for Life 2002 conference in Pasadena. Viewing the quilt was a moving and emotional experience for nearly everyone. If you haven't yet created a quilt square in honor of your child, please consider doing so right away! We are always adding to the quilt. Instructions are available from the online quilt submission form.

After an introduction by CWD Events Coordinator Laura Billetdeaux, the conference officially began with a ceremonial cutting of the ribbon by pilot Douglas Cairns, the first pilot with type 1 diabetes to fly around the world, and the IDYA teens volunteering at the conference. Conference attendees then entered the exhibit hall to enjoy the Grand Opening Reception, sponsored by Aventis Pharmaceuticals. Kids ran to the various booths to get goodies, and stopped repeatedly at the Novo Nordisk booth to redeem their special gold coins for goodies inside the special vending machine.

An outdoor buffet in the Ballroom Circle rounded out the evening. The many different roasts, finger food, and side dishes were delicious, and carb counts were provided for every food item. Many thanks to CWD dietitian Mike Schurig for countless hours of work on menus, ingredients, and carb counts! Kudos also to CWD moms Bonnie Silvester and Heather Kyllo for making sure there were healthy gluten free options at every meal and snack break!
