Friends for Life: LA 2004

Over 1,200 people from 33 states and ten countries traveled to Universal City, California for our fifth annual conference, Friends for Life 2004. The conference was held from July 14 to 17, 2004 at the Sheraton Universal Hotel, adjacent to Universal Studios Hollywood.

Families began gathering at the hotel on Sunday afternoon several days before the official start of the conference, and by Tuesday evening there were already nearly 1,000 CWD participants on site! This was evident in happy faces and hugs across the pool deck, and in some incredible smiles from the 'kids being kids' in the Sheraton's pool. The weather cooperated for us the entire week, with sunny skies, warm temperatures during the day, and wonderfully cool evenings.

As in the past four summers, emotions ran high as families met their long-distance CWD family. Kids who perhaps had never met another person with type 1 diabetes found literally hundreds of other kindred spirits, all testing blood glucose, taking injections, or pumping insulin without missing a beat of the fun. The goal of CWD conferences is always to have kids spend their energy on being kids -- having fun while taking excellent care of themselves and learning and supporting each other.

Our generous sponsors and exhibitors spent three days sharing their products with families in the exhibit hall. Many of them held Focus Groups on Wednesday to discuss their current products or new ideas with interested families. These were well-attended and CWD will offer these opportunities again next year.

On Saturday, nearly 600 people spent the day at Universal Studios as part of the Children with Diabetes Foundation Benefit Day, sponsored by Abbott Diabetes Care. Families headed out early to beat the heat and ended the day with a scrumptious BBQ at the Universal's Globe Theater.
