Jeff Hitchcock is the creator, editor, webmaster and president of Children with Diabetes. After earning a degree in computational mathematics in 1981, Jeff worked in high tech and traveled the world, meeting Brenda, who would become his wife, in Africa. He worked in defense related industries until 1995, when he started a small Internet company and launched Children with Diabetes. He subsequently worked at LEXIS-NEXIS and Pearson plc on Internet initiatives, and now works full time bringing Children with Diabetes to you.
A finicky connoisseur of hotel meeting space, cappuccino, and kid-friendly cheese and fruit platters, Laura Billetdeaux is CWD's VP of Education and Programs. Since 2000, Laura has organized every single CWD conference, always keeping in mind the true purpose of CWD - education and support of families with type 1, and always keeping in mind why it all works – the efforts of so many dedicated individuals. Laura lives in Manchester, Michigan with husband Neal, who graciously and energetically assists with the conference teen programs. They are parents of Sam and Carolyn who both attend universities and serve as youth faculty at CWD conferences as time allows.
Joseph Natale is the VP, New Media for Children with Diabetes. Joe has over 15 years experience that includes a broad spectrum of business and technical experience in developing and applying emerging business models. His background includes serving on multiple Johnson & Johnson company boards and developing global business strategies for the Consumer and Diabetes franchises. Colleen Broughton, CWD's Community Director, was one of Children with Diabetes' first financial supporters from the diabetes industry, and has been a friend and fan of CWD since 1995. A writer at heart, and an interactive marketing maven by experience, Colleen spent 15 years creating health care content and developing Web properties for Johnson & Johnson's Diabetes Franchise. She loves being an advocate for the CWD community, and her job is to continue to improve --and help expand--CWD events and experiences. The wrangler of young children, Colleen is an empathetic parent and catalyst for fun; she proudly lives in the Seattle, Washington area.
Mike Schurig, MS, RD, LD, CDE, serves as Conferences and Content Manager for Children With Diabetes. As a diabetes educator, registered dietitian and person with type 1 diabetes since the age of 12, Mike has had extensive experience in diabetes education with kids and parents. Mike is active with local ADA activities, regional diabetes educator groups, and the CWD website. His interests are insulin pump education and technical advances in diabetes. Mike enjoys visiting the nearby theme parks and enjoying Central Florida with his wife Gayle and his daughter Allyson.
Katherine Trevisol is CWD's regulatory and compliance director, primarily working on business literature and content for the CWD web site and conferences and coordinating that effort with other J&J companies in the Diabetes franchise. After work hours, she is completing her MSc. in European Law and mentors teenagers in the local high school. In her former professional life, she worked as a critical care nurse and continues to maintain her R.N. license in Florida. Katherine joined CWD from another J&&J company, Cordis, where she worked in regulatory affairs, meaning she worked directly with government health agencies, such as the U.S. FDA as well as international agencies, registering medical devices for their commercial distribution.
Lisa Anstine works as a consultant in the technology field, primarily working on business solutions for private sector clients. She is currently working on her PhD and teaches part time at Frederick Community College. Lisa joined CWD after helping Lauren with name badges at registration in Orlando a few years ago. If something needs to be done on a computer or with AV equipment, she is more than happy to help. Lisa can always be found at the registration table with Julia and Mary. Her greatest accomplishments are her two Tweens, Laura (diagnosed in 1999) and Thomas. When she is not working, Lisa and her husband Jim spend time planning their future life on an island paradise.
Julia Mattingly is mom to 13 year old Hannah and 11 year old Ethan, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 10 months and who started pumping when he was 3. Julia, Ed, and the kids have been to every single Friends for Life conference and most of the regionals as well! Julia coordinates registration at each conference, and you can always find her when you need a smile and a "Hi Y'All!" Julia loves being in charge of the registration area because she gets to meet everyone who walks in the door. Her best CWD memory is from 2001 when she met all of her CWD email buddies in Orlando for the first time. She also loves to see the smiles on her kids' faces when they re-connect with their CWD friends each summer.
Mary Podjasek is the mom of Richie and Kara. Kara was diagnosed with diabetes at age 8 1/2 and Mary's husband Mike was diagnosed at the age of 30. At Joslin, she assisted with starting a diabetes education program for the Latino community. She resides in New York with her husband, Brian, who has type 1 diabetes and their two Labrador retrievers.
Joanne Stroud, MHA, FACHE is first and foremost a CWD Mom. Her son Ben was diagnosed in 1998 at the age of ten and CWD quickly became their lifeline. She attended her first conference in 2003 and instantly became hooked, telling Laura she'd do anything (within reason of course!) she could to assist CWD. Last year, Ben (20) became an official volunteer for FFL and is looking forward to making it a family affair once again in 2008. Joanne is married to Jim, a CRNA and they have two other sons, Kyle (22), a student at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and James (17), a high school junior and soccer player for the San Diego Surf US Development Academy Team.
