Platinum Level Sponsor
TheraSense, located in Alameda, California, has developed the FreeStyleTM Blood Glucose Monitoring System designed to eliminate a major barrier to testing: the pain of the finger stick. The FreeStyle system utilizes breakthrough, patented electrochemical technology to accurately and precisely measure glucose from a tiny sample of blood, about the size of a pinhead, or only 1/3rd of a microliter. People with diabetes now have the freedom to test on the forearm, upper arm, hand, thigh, and calf without the pain and hassle of the traditional finger stick. The FreeStyle system is also a great fingertip testing system! The FreeStyle system is available at most major pharmacy chains and independent pharmacies nationwide and on the TheraSense website at www.therasense.com. TheraSense is pleased to be the Platinum Sponsor for the Pasadena conference, as the sponsor of Children With Diabetes Foundation Day at Universal Studios Hollywood Theme ParkTM. We are honored to be the Platinum Level Sponsor for 3 straight years since the conference was first initiated.

Diabetes Research Institute (www.drinet.org) is recognized as a world leader in cure-focused research. Pioneering new technologies in islet cell transplantation since 1971, the DRI remains true to its mission to cure diabetes. The first true "fast track" center for diabetes research, the DRI continues to lead the way in developing new ways to speed significant findings from the lab to patients in the fastest and safest way possible. To further accelerate progress toward a cure, the DRI has initiated global collaborations with other leading research centers and biotech companies, and continually trains others in the field. Over the years, the DRI has conducted a number of pilot studies, demonstrating that diabetes can be reversed and that transplanted islets can function for more than 10 years. Much of the DRI's current research is aimed at overcoming two remaining challenges: transplanting these insulin-producing cells without the long-term need for harmful anti-rejection drugs, and obtaining enough islet cells to cure everyone affected by diabetes. For the millions of families who are looking to the world of science for answers, the DRI is quickly becoming the best hope for a cure. DRI is pleased to be a Silver Level Sponsor for Friends For Life: Pasadena 2002.

The GlucoWatch® (Cygnus, Inc., Redwood City, CA) Biographer is a new type of monitor designed to provide frequent, automatic and non-invasive measurements of glucose levels. It can provide up to three readings per hour, for as long as 12 hours, day or night. The GlucoWatch Biographer automatically and non-invasively measures glucose collected through the skin, not from blood. It also creates an "electronic diary," storing up to 4,000 values that can be reviewed at the touch of a button. In addition, glucose alert levels can be set so that an alarm sounds if readings are too high or too low. The alarm automatically sounds if readings decline rapidly. The GlucoWatch Biographer is designed to help identify trends and to track patterns in glucose levels that would be difficult to detect with current testing techniques alone. It is not intended to replace "finger-stick" blood glucose testing, but rather to be used together with blood glucose testing to provide more complete, ongoing information. The GlucoWatch Biographer has been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a prescription device for adults (18 years and older). A supplemental pre-market approval (PMA) submission for use of the GlucoWatch Biographer by children and adolescents (ages 7-17) is currently under expedited review by the FDA. Cygnus, Inc. is proud to be a Bronze Sponsor of this conference.
