Camp Holiday Trails offers children with special medical needs what few places can—the chance to enjoy recreational and social experiences that otherwise would not be available to them. Our Programs
- Summer Camp
Camp Holiday Trails has been our hallmark program since 1973. Our campers, ages seven to seventeen, enjoy the same activities as at other camps—swimming, riding horses, paddling canoes, and fishing in the lake. Adventure challenge activities like our ropes course empower children and help them discover new potentials. Sports programs offer non-competitive opportunities for success and allow campers to gain greater sensitivity toward others. In every activity, we strive to help our children develop social skills, self-confidence, and a deeper awareness of their own abilities. These lessons go home with the campers, helping prepare them for the challenges they face in everyday life.
- Therapeutic Riding Center
The Camp Holiday Trails Therapeutic Riding Center serves children and adults with physical and cognitive challenges. Our mission is to improve lives through the therapeutic use of horses and to help participants develop a greater awareness of their abilities. For the rider, the movement of a horse provides a gentle, rhythmic motion similar to the action of the human pelvis during walking. The activity strengthens and tones muscles, improves balance and coordination, builds self-esteem, and offers a freedom unequaled in any clinic therapeutic setting.
- Family Retreats
Camp Holiday Trails recognizes the value of providing continuing wellness opportunities for the whole family. During non-summer months, Holiday Trails provides therapeutic retreats that are diagnosis specific. While family members participate in many of the same activities as our summer camp, these retreats provide a venue where families and care-givers can work together to gain understanding, share information, and find new resources.
- Networking
Understanding the needs of families to share ideas, resources and concerns, Camp Holiday Trails provides social and educational events throughout the year. Families can come together for a variety of fun outings like University of Virginia sporting events, our annual holiday party, and educational trips. In addition, our staff can travel to your home community to provide a unique Camp Holiday Trails experience through a day of learning and laughter.
Our Medical Staff
Doctors and nurses from local hospitals are teamed with pediatric residents and medical students from the University of Virginia Medical School to provide the best medical care available. While each camper’s medical needs are treated with serious concern, the clinical environment remains quietly in the background. When our medical staff are not tending to patients, they might be participating in a comedy skit or sharing a campfire. Our Counselors
Our direct-care counselors and activities coordinators come from all over the country. Their training is intensive and includes behavioral development, medical awareness, and above all, good communication skills. All staff have experience working with children. They are required to undergo an extensive interview process, including a thorough background check. Our Kids
We are one of the few organizations in the country that integrate children with a wide variety of health conditions in programs that encourage them to explore their strengths and challenge their boundaries. We welcome children with a broad range of acute and chronic medical conditions including:
