Buenos Noches, Amigos. Bienvenidos a todos de la Ciudad Mexico. I'm in Mexco City at the International Diabetes Federation meetings -- Jeff gave a great presentation today on CWD.. Who wants to talk about the "Food Police?"

Betty, glad to see you made it. Hopefully, some others will show up soon. Food Police might have been better BEFORE Halloween LOL

Hey, Brenda! Well, we'll see -- it comes up on just about every chat one way or another. HOw are you and MArissa?

Marissa forgot to bolus for lunch until on the way home (420). She hasn't eaten anything and was 183 about 1 hr. ago. My stomach is driving me nuts. Jeff thinks I might need to join him on Prilosec. Felt better after Mylanta. Having Tums for dessert! Will see the dr. on Wed. Kids home tomorrow for Election Day and I don't dare leave Marissa in charge of her siblings; it just doesn't work. Hope the Mexican climate and food are ok.

Verna (MI) (Brandon 6 dx'd 3 mo.) from 24.17.84.240
Brandon is his own food [police. He NEVER forgets a snack, and at times his constant reminders that snack time is close drives me crazy. But on the positive side, it is wonderful that he takes such a personal responsibility for remembering.

Mon Nov 6 2000 21:02:43 Eastern US
BettyB (Food Matters Chat Host) from 152.163.206.178
Kerry - "Food POlice" is a term that's used to describe a couple of problems -- one of them is parents feeling like they have to "police" everything their kids eat because of their diabetes -- for some families that causes a lot of conflict and hassles

Another way it's used is to refer to people (like friends and other relatives) who take it on themselves to comment on what you or a child wih diabetes eats -- unsolicited advice and criticism

Mon Nov 6 2000 21:05:48 Eastern US
BettyB (Food Matters Chat Host) from 152.163.206.178
Verna - it's a great precendent to set so early in Brandon's diabetes that you are all cooperating, sharing tasks around the diabetes. Everybody can do alittle and then there's less of a burden on any one family member.

iloopyman, I don't host the food chat every monday -- sometimes we have others authors or dietitians who do t. I'm doing this one because I wrote a book called "Sweet Kids' that hs a lot to say about taking the hassles out of managing food and diabetes.

Melanie -- rather than a book, try something ore short and sweet. Take label from a Hershey Bar (about 20 grams carb) and just about any sugar-free candy and show them that they get just as much or more carb.. That's a real eye opener for ost people -- anybody else got any ideas on how to deal effectvely with those "helpful" folks??

So jc and iloopymom -- you know all about how tough it can be to try to get kids (whose appetites naturallu vary from meal to meal and day to day) to try to eat about the same amount day in and day out -- that's the sort of things that can get people to feeling like "food police>"

BettyB (Food Matters Chat Host) from 152.163.206.178
Ellen, you are a wise woman. And then feel bad because they feel dishonest. It's why I'm so anxious for parents to get the message early that nutrition is NO DIFFERENT for the child with diabetes than for anyone else in the family. Sweets are OK in portions that are age-appropriate -- you just have to find a method to keep total carb and insulin in balance.

BettyB (Food Matters Chat Host) from 152.163.206.178
jc, that's such a hard situation. Kids need as much food as they need -- have you talked with your team about learning to adjust insulin for carbs? That would give you more freedom to let your son eat more normally.

We went to a celebration party this weekend of a woman who has had D 50 years. There were 6 other pumpers there and it was great to sit and watch them eat what they wanted and when, test themselves and then give themselves more insulin. (Not necessarily in that order.) Almost all had started pumping in the last 6 months and all were still learning new food rules. One man has had D for 53 years.

Vanya recently wore the continuous glucose monitor, found that he goes up after meals, despite what should be adequate boluses with his pump. Endo says that's been a common finding, and recommended the boys have part of their mealtime insulin BEFORE eating, the rest afterwards, when they know what the total carb count was.

If he gets low BEFORE the meal, that's comig from the background insulin (like NPH given in the morning. Kate, then adjusting your basal rate downward is your best bet.. you can do it as a temporary basal or a couple of other ways, depending on brand of pump. Depending on how long your workouts are and how hard you exercise, you might learn like some other hard driving athletes that suspending the pump during exercise is even possible. Gary Hall just took his off while swimming.. info about exACTLY HOW TO FIGURE ALL THAT OUT IN A BOK CALLED "pUMPING iNSULIN" BY jOHN wALSH.

Susanne, that's great. For sme people caught early in the development of type 1, initiating insulin seems to "turn off" the autoimmune response and that helps preserve a bit of beta cell mass -- making the diabete much more stable more or less indefinitely.

Brenda, I think just about EVERYBODY needs the occasional Twinkie (or whatever!). Health eating can include those things. If most of the time you're puttig healthy choices on the table and eating them yourselves, the kids will tend to eat the same way.. and then occasionally everybody has treats -- and, as you've done with marissa, you learn how to manage those right along with all the other foods that contain carbs.

Well, not everyone likes the taste of those products, so it's great to know how to substitute foods the child actually likes and just "beef them up" with the uncooked cornstarch.

I think Splenda is pretty good, can be used for cooking. Anyone else tried it? I find I really don't need subsitutes much. Seems silly when the kids eat junk food with lots of sugar. Tonight I made a large bread pudding, used half a cup of raisins, only 2 Tbsps of real sugar. Tasted fine.
