Mon Jan 1 2001 20:34:32 Eastern US
Robin from 64.12.103.28
My nephew slept over Christmas night & used my sons' tester. He tested 196. Today he came over & I had him test again....... now 206. My question is what is the range for people who don't have diabetes?

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:37:21 Eastern US
Maryann (michigan) (Jill 15, dx'd 96, pumping) from 63.23.175.172
gee Robin that doesn't sound good! I would be worried

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:38:53 Eastern US
Robin from 64.12.103.28
Hi Maryann I sent him home with Jays' spare tester & called my sis to let her know what's up.

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:39:14 Eastern US
Maryann (michigan) (Jill 15, dx'd 96, pumping) from 63.23.175.172
I would have such a sinking in the pit of my stomach

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:39:17 Eastern US
Derrick from 64.12.104.42
normal is between 80 and 150 unless he had a lot of sugar before you tested him but it should drop to normal very quickly...does he have any ofthe other symptoms that come along with diabetes

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:39:34 Eastern US
Maryann (michigan) (Jill 15, dx'd 96, pumping) from 63.23.175.172
how old is the nephew?

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:40:07 Eastern US
Danniel/FL from 24.164.55.104
hi i am here :-o

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:40:17 Eastern US
Robin from 64.12.103.28
16 I want him to test before breakfast he also said he's very tired a lot

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:41:22 Eastern US
Connie(BC) (T 1//pumping) from 209.53.87.211
Robin, he should be seeing a dctor today!

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:42:05 Eastern US
Derrick from 64.12.104.42
I agree he should see a doctor

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:42:08 Eastern US
Maryann (michigan) (Jill 15, dx'd 96, pumping) from 63.23.175.172
I almost dread the day that we encounter someone that is coming down with D. I don't know how you can be telling them to get to a Dr without making him feel so upset

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:42:24 Eastern US
Robin (son Jay 17 dx'd 8/00) from 64.12.103.28
Oh Connie don't you think he could wait for a fasting bg??

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:43:32 Eastern US
Connie(BC) (T 1//pumping) from 209.53.87.211
At that age, it's very hard to tell them, but yes Robin I wouldn't wait!

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:43:33 Eastern US
Maryann (michigan) (Jill 15, dx'd 96, pumping) from 63.23.175.172
even if his fasting sugar is decent , he still needs to be checked out for even possible type 2, or early type 1

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:44:22 Eastern US
Robin (son Jay 17 dx'd 8/00) from 64.12.103.28
So what is range for non-diabetes person??

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:45:04 Eastern US
Connie(BC) (T 1//pumping) from 209.53.87.211
How long after food were those tests Robin?

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:45:39 Eastern US
Maryann (michigan) (Jill 15, dx'd 96, pumping) from 63.23.175.172
that is a real rough age, as you well know. How is Jay dealing with it

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:46:18 Eastern US
Connie(BC) (T 1//pumping) from 209.53.87.211
60 to 110 is a non D, varying higher a touch of course with very sweet foods

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:46:24 Eastern US
Maryann (michigan) (Jill 15, dx'd 96, pumping) from 63.23.175.172
normal is usually 80-140, from my experience

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:47:15 Eastern US
Maryann (michigan) (Jill 15, dx'd 96, pumping) from 63.23.175.172
I am sort of glad Jill got it well before the terrible teens!! but of course more yrs with D. is not good either

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:47:21 Eastern US
Robin (son Jay 17 dx'd 8/00) from 64.12.103.28
both tests were after big meals which is why I sent tester w/ him for fasting test.

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:48:46 Eastern US
Robin (son Jay 17 dx'd 8/00) from 64.12.103.28
Jay is coping o.k.

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:48:55 Eastern US
Connie(BC) (T 1//pumping) from 209.53.87.211
Well then I would make sure that he test first thing in A M and if sugars are up, go to the doctor

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:49:31 Eastern US
Maryann (michigan) (Jill 15, dx'd 96, pumping) from 63.23.175.172
does Jay mind testing at school and before driving? that is always a pain to get them to do. Jill gets her license sat when she turns 16

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:50:19 Eastern US
Connie(BC) (T 1//pumping) from 209.53.87.211

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:52:07 Eastern US
Connie(BC) (T 1//pumping) from 209.53.87.211
Doesn't she have to drive with a qualified driver for a while and write and drive a test?

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:52:28 Eastern US

Connie(BC) (T 1//pumping) from 209.53.87.211

she doesn't get her own car! like so many do! and I have told her NOT to take others till she has more experience. And I know I will have to nag and nag about testing

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:55:32 Eastern US
Derrick ( 19 dx 1991) from 64.12.104.42

I my home province it used to be 16 for a beginners, and I "think" 6 months with a qualified driver. Here it's as soon as you turn 16 if you pass the written test, and have someone over 19 in the car.......no wonder my shop is busy!!

Mon Jan 1 2001 20:56:57 Eastern US

Connie, finetuning the insulin is sure a key in trying to, first, stop weight gain, and then turn it around in type 1. With all the wonders of the pump, it can suck you into doing just what people who don't have diabetes do - that is, follow the first law of physics "energy is neither created nor destroyed- it is, instead, stored on the hips!"

Brenda, the only way I know of to AVOID stress is to join the heavenly choir! Seriously, stress is part of life but there are certainly ways to reduce it and to respond to it more positively. The first one that comes to mind is to try to reduce the stress you put on yourself by understanding that perfect diabetes control isn't possible with today's tools - either for you or your kids -- but that's OK because perfect control also isn't necessary to protect health.

ELLEN, i think that at first he was suprised - thinking that it was high - i never really delved into diabetes with him - but the more time we spend together, the more I am sharing (little by little - all depends on the personality of the guy - hes a bit more of a straight shooter)I told him that that was not all that bad - the lowest ive ever had was a 7.0 or so and that was when i was somewhat neurotic about diabetes and had the time to really focus on it all the time (between graduation and work)

I'll resolve to re-read the book and maybe make some visual reminders to stick to those principles. I'm happy to say that the book really helped me with my 12 year old. Megan used to run her hands under warm water, massage her arms, the whole 9 yards. It was always difficult, but now she is so interested in rushing back out that she is cutting corners. I think we'll just have to get into better habits again.--Linda

renee, not if it does not work for you - i have the freestyle, but really feelt he downloading capability of the profile is what i need right now - despite the large drop of blood required (which I believe the rep said may be changing when they come out with an updated version of the profile/once touch)

Mon Jan 1 2001 22:06:51 Eastern US
BettyB (Food Matters Chat Host) from 205.188.198.151
Angel, Freestyle is a relatively new meter made by Therasense. it takes an EXTREMELY small blood sample and the sample can be taken from the top of the arm where the prick really cannot be felt.
