Carbohydrate counting is the preferred method of nutritional management of diabetes for many endocrinologists. By matching carbohydrates eaten at each meal with short acting insulin, either from a pump or by taking injections of Humalog or Novolog, people with diabetes are no longer restricted in their diets. Kids (and adults) can eat pre-sweetened cereals for breakfast, for example, as long as they match the carbohydrates in the food with the correct amount of insulin. Since labels on packaged foods contain carbohydrate values, estimating total carbohydrates is easy.

Carb Cards are an excellent, fun tool to help introduce or teach carbohydrate counting to children or adults. The Carb Cards package includes a set of 54 full color flashcards with pictures and carbohydrate values for common foods. The pictures are easily recognizable by kids as young as five. (Our two five-year-old testers were able to identify almost every food item just from the picture.) Nine blank cards and a pen are also included, so you can add pictures of favorite foods that aren't in the pack. The Activity Booklet has been revised to include a 30 day food diary and more activities for kids from ages 4-100. Card games such as War, Concentration and Solitaire easily adapt to the deck. Each activity is designed to be fun and educational. Everything is included in a 5"x8" clear plastic drawstring bag.
