From Maryland, USA:

My 11 year old daughter has Type 1 diabetes. Is it safe for her to get in a hot tub Jacuzzi? My family would like to get one but I heard that it was not good for diabetics.

Hot tubs can be safe, but do have some problems.

  1. Be sure the water is kept clean. Warmth and bacteria, algae, etc. go together.

  2. Children get hot and cold easier than adults do. It is a fact of mass. Little children can get very hot--dangerously hot.

  3. Diabetic complications: some with neuropathy might not feel the heat. This is not likely to be a problem for a child.
