From Klamath Falls, Oregon, USA:

Is it possible for someone to have Type 1 diabetes to not have to take insulin and control their blood sugar purely by diet and exercise?

Not beyond the honeymoon or partial remission phase, and it is rare even then. If someone genuinely doesn't need insulin beyond this phase, then they do not have Type 1 diabetes.
