From Los Angeles, California, USA:
My 13 year old son was recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. A lot of people have told me that this is a permanent disability and he is eligible for SSI Benefits. I would like to know if this is true.
Eligibility varies from state to state though for the most part children with Type 1 diabetes are not considered to be 'disabled' in the usual sense. All states, however, have access to the Federally-funded Children's Health Plan for cases where there is financial need.
Additional comments from Dr. Larry Deeb:Diabetes is only eligible with complications.
