From Massachusetts, USA:
Does diabetes cause obesity or is diabetes linked to obese people?
Obesity and typeá2 diabetes are closely linked because of how insulin and glucose work together in the body. Insulin has many jobs in the body, but the two most important are getting glucose into the cells for energy and storing extra glucose as fat. People with type 2 diabetes have problems at each cell site letting insulin bring glucose in for energy. As a result, there is a lot of glucose in the bloodstream, so insulin takes that "extra" glucose and stores it as fat. This cycle continues unless you make the cells more receptive to insulin with exercise, diet, or medication.
Type 2 diabetes has a strong hereditary component, so, if you have family members with type 2 diabetes, you are much more likely to develop the condition. By maintaining a healthy weight, exercising, and eating a nutritious diet, you can reduce your chances of getting type 2 diabetes by as much as 58% as shown in the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) results from earlier this year.
