Hi! My name is Bryan, and I'm 7.5 years old. When I found out Michael had diabetes I was real scared. Being only five, I didn't understand why everyone was so upset, and why he had to live at the hospital for so long. It was just before Christmas, and I kept asking my Mom when Michael was coming home and when we could be a family again.
Bryan (Michael's Older Brother)
When he did come home, I was a little put out at all the attention he was getting. Because he couldn't eat all the "good stuff", I couldn't either - and that wasn't fair to me. Also, my Mom was pregnant and it seemed all she talked about was Michael, and the new baby.
Then on top of everything, I thought he was going to die (DIabetes), and now because the baby was coming, we had to share a room - and for sure I'd catch it, and die too!!
Well, thanks to lots of help from Beth at McMaster, lots of patience from Mom and Dad, and the fact that I'm a lot older, I know none of those things are true. Michael just started Kindergarten, and I help look after him. My friends think it's real cool that he gives himself needles and blood tests, and we all look out for him on the playground. Once in a while, he needs help at night and I'm always there for him. My parents are really happy about that!
It still bugs me that I can't eat all the stuff that I want to when I want to, but I guess that's OK. Sometimes Mom and Dad put special things in my lunch, or take me out for a special meal by myself. At halloween, I trade Michael some of my candy that he can have when he has a low, and he gives me the stuff that isn't really good for him. And when he has a "bad" needle, or gets kind of sad - I hold his hand and give him a big hug!
We both love to play hockey, baseball, soccer, and go swimming (at least some things never change!) and last summer, we both went to Day Camp (Camp Steelaway) at Dofasco's Rec. Park. Mom and Dad went and taught the Camp Counsellors all about diabetes, we all took great care of Michael, and he fit right in just like any other kid!
I just participated in a study at McMaster to help find a cure for diabetes. I hated the needle, but really hope they find a cure soon because I love my brother and want to take him to Pizza Hut for the desert bar as soon as he's cured!
