Hi, my name is Becky and I'm seven years old. I was diagnosed with diabetes in August 1997. My mom had just got back from her honeymoon, she got married in July. She got back and started her new job. She was really busy and didn't really notice at first that something was wrong. We stayed with her friend while she was gone on her vacation. Her friend told her that I was drinking a real lot and wetting the bed 2-3 times in the night and going to the bathroom a lot. Mom thought it might have been an infection. She watched me for a couple days and monitered my drinkng and bathroom at daycare and home. She noticed that my urine smelled sweet and I didn't smell bad from wetting the bed.
One day after swimming I felt really bad. I had to lay down. I was crying and didn't know why. Mom got really scared. She gave me some food. Mom works in the medical field she knew something was wrong. She discussed the symptoms with her
friends at work and she knew what was wrong. she called the doctor's office and requested a urine test to check for diabetes. That's certainly what it was. My mom was not suprised. The good thing was that mom caught it before I got sick. I was lucky, I did not have to get admitted to the hospital only out patient for education. That took two whole days to go through. We do really good now, I have to get four shots everyday, because I don't eat a lot any more. I had to go on short
acting insulin. It works for me!
