Hi. My name is Courtney Schaefer and I am 5 1/2 and live in Pennsylvania. I got diabetes on December 20, 1999, five days before Christmas. I think I was more upset about missing Christmas than I was about having diabetes. The first signs I had were being overly hungry, then I got a severe headache on Saturday, then I get really thirsty, and then I was urinating a lot. My mommy was getting worried that I might have a bladder infection, so after school on Monday we went to the doctor and that is when we found out I had ketones in my urine. So we went immediately to the hospital. They took my blood and the sugar level was 606, so we stayed in the hospital until Wednesday night, then I got to come home. My dad also has diabetes.
I do not mind the finger tests, and only get insulin once a day. I feet pretty lucky that I only get one shot. I was on a 2100 calorie diet, but now I am on a 1600 calorie diet because they had to get me back to my normal weight, which was 46 pounds. I had dropped to 39 pounds and now I am back to normal. They believe that I may be going through the honeymoon phase.
My favorite things to do are ballet, riding my bike, going swimming, and playing with my twin brother (who is not diabetic) and my younger 3 1/2 year old sister. Thank you for reading my story.
Courtney would love to receive e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
