Hi everybody! My name is Kiki Karafyllidou and I am 12 years old. I was born in December 1988 in a small city called Lavara at the north east end of Greece (Europe), where I live with my dad, mom and my little brother Paschalis.
I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in December 1994 when I was 6 years old. Since then I "live together" with my "sweet-problem," taking insulin 4 times a day and checking my blood sugar 5 times a day. My hobbies are athletics, computing, playing piano and guitar, reading books, learning languages, and chatting with my friends.
Having just completed 5,5 years of life with diabetes, I could say that I have already learned, although I'm still learning, how to take care of myself (checking my blood sugar - basing my insulin on what I eat and figuring out my own dosages - giving myself shots)!
Despite all the difficulties that my daily diabetic experience contains, I'm trying to have -- and I really have -- an efficient life with many, many activities, which make me feel more alive, that means more useful to myself and all others around me, more cheerful, most happy! I would love to get in touch with kids like me and share with them our mutual (diabetic) experience! So, if some of you (Children with Diabetes) would like to reach me, e-mail me at
Thank you in advance. Your new pal,
Kiki from Greece
