A year and a half-ago when I was 13 (July 6, 2000) my family and I had a huge surprise! I was diagnosed with Diabetes with a really high reading of my blood sugars. I had all the symptoms of being diabetic, but unfortunately I didn't not know it at the time. My parents saw the changes in my body very quickly. In a month I had lost over 20 pounds, and my face had gotten very pale. I would always be in the bathroom, drinking a lot of water and quickly. I was sent to my regular physician with my mom after I came home from a family trip in Florida. They had tested my sugars and the meter had registered "HI." My doctor had told my mom that we had to get to the hospital to help me. At this point we still didn't know how high I was. My mom and I rushed over to the hospital where they tested me again reading a sugar that was well near the 1000's. My dad, who was in work, came after he found out. They put me on IV drip of insulin for almost 7 hours before sending me to an even larger hospital that specialized just in children's diabetes (they also specialized in many other children's diseases). They took good care of me for a week and helped me learn about my diabetes.
I am doing very well with keeping my sugars in the right place. My doctor says I'll soon be ending the honeymoon period. She is also helping me think about the pump. I am on a high carb. Diet with eight blood sugar testings a day and only two regularly scheduled shots. No one in our family has type one diabetes, but my grandparents have type two or a thyroid problem on both sides of my family.
A little about me is my name is Cassie or Cassandra, and I am 14 years old going on 15. I live about an hour from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I have one little sister that is 12. I love music such as alternative, rock, and punk. I love to hangout with friends, and I like to talk to my 3-year-old neighbor. I love to play sports, such as swimming and volleyball.
I like to teach students and friends about diabetes at school and if you ever want to talk just email me at Cottocandy386@aol.com!
