Hi, my name is Abby and I am 23 months old. I was just diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes on June 26, 2000. I spent five days in the hospital and I was very scared. I didn't understand why all these people were hurting me and my Mommy and Daddy weren't trying to stop them. I finally got to come home and I thought everything was over, only to find out it wasn't. Now my Mommy and Daddy give me my shots and finger pokes. I started sleeping on my hands at night now so it is hard for them to check my blood sugars. We are trying to do everything we can to educate others and raise funds for me and all the other children and adults with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. My Daddy also has Type 1 and has had since he was 7 years old.
I have terrible highs, unexplained highs and that makes me grouchy and want to hit and scream. Mommy is trying to get me on the pump as soon as possible to hopefully get me on a level rate.
I still do not understand everything that is happening to me and I hate it when it is my turn for shots and it's not Daddy's. I ask Mommy, "Why you do that?", "Please don't". It makes me sad and I know my Mommy gets sad too when she has to give me a shot, but she loves me and I don't want to get sick, so she does it for me.
I have 2 older brothers, Jason, 24 and Kevin 19, I love them so much and they are nice to me and help make me feel better. I also have a mini wiener dog names "Skittles". I love her and she sleeps by me.
My Grandma was recently moved to AZ so I can not see her now. It is too expensive and far away for us to travel. My other grandparents are in Israel so I don't see them either. Mom and Daddy tried to move to IA before my Aunt bought my Grandma a house in AZ so I could have a grandma, but they didn't do it in time and now we are all sad. I tell her goodnight everynight when I look at the moon, I know she is looking at the same moon and hopefully thinking about me.
I hope someday soon there will be a cure for diabetes for all of us. Until then, I will be brave and take my shots.
