Hi, my name is Emily and I turned 5 in December 2000. I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes on October 23, 2000. I have 2 sisters named Allison, and Lauren.
My Mom and Dad knew that something was wrong with me but they weren't sure what. My Mom took me to see the doctor several times, but they said I was fine. I was always sleeping and drinking alot. Then my Mom read about diabetes on the internet. We went back to see the doctor again. This time he checked my blood sugar and it was 690. I had to go to the hospital right away. I stayed at the hospital for 3 days. I liked it at the hospital because they let me watch Nickelodeon all day. I also got to have all the soda I wanted.
No one in my family has diabetes. I have a friend named Addy, she is 4. She went to my preschool last year. She has diabetes like I do. I like to play with Addy. She has a pump.
Right now I have to get three shots a day. My mom says that in May I will be getting an insulin pump. I'm excited about getting a pump just like my friend.
I am going to a diabetes camp this summer with my Mom, Dad, and my sister Allison. Lauren can't go with us because Mom says she is too little she is only 8 months old. I hope to make a lot of new friends when I go there.
