I bet looking at me in these pictures you wouldn't think anything was wrong with me, huh? But looks are deceiving because I have juvenile diabetes!
My name is Logan and I am 3 years old. One year ago I nearly died from this disease. I was diagnosed on June 9, 2000 at the age of 2 1/2 and the next day on June 10th I was lifeflighted for being in the advanced stages of DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis). I was slipping into a coma. I spent two days in the pediatric ICU where my new pediatric endocrinologist took very good care of me.
I'm doing much better now and I really like my endocrinologist. But this has still been a difficult year and diabetes is hard on me. When I get ill, it lasts for a long time now and I get a lot sicker than I used to. I don't like my shots, they hurt! But I'm getting pretty used to the fingersticks. After my mommy checks my blood, I like to count down with the meter and then give it to her when it registers my blood sugar. Because I am a toddler and my activity is never the same, I suffer from a lot of lows. This sometimes makes me disoriented and confused. I get really sleepy and I don't feel good. My mom has to force sugar down me sometimes when I don't want to take it and I don't like that.
One of my favorite things to do is go eat pizza at Mazzio's. When we go there, mom gives me an extra shot of insulin so I can eat more than one piece of pizza. Usually I'm on a pretty strict schedule and diet to control my blood sugars, so hopefully I won't suffer complications from the diabetes later in life. But there are times we make exceptions and I get extra things.
I love to play outside with my little brother and our three dogs and one cat. Chance and I are 25 mos. apart. I like diggers a lot (bulldozer's, backhoe's, etc.) so my mommy decorated my room in diggers and dump trucks. Chance likes trucks a lot. I love books. My mommy always reads to me. I really enjoy swimming, playing with my cars and trucks, and wrestling with my Uncle's Stevie and Jason. And I like to ride my bike even though it causes me to suffer from a lot of lows after I go to sleep at night.
We have a family walk team called "Logan's Heroes" in the JDRF Walk. The picture of me in the tuxedo was taken 2 weeks before I was diagnosed. I was the ringbearer in my Uncle Ike's wedding. The other picture is of my brother and I. It was taken last month (May 2001). Chance and I are very close. Sometimes it is hard for me to understand why I have to have shots everyday and he doesn't. I hope a cure is found soon. I don't like having diabetes! If you would like to read my mommy's story about me, it is on the parents' page under Deena Sheets.
