Back to Kids' Voices Alex

Hello my name is Alexandria Thora-Lyne (Alex). I am 3 years old and I live in California. I was just diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on December, 06 2001. I have 3 brothers: Matt 17 years, Devon 14 years and Zech 1-1/2 years. I was very scared when I went to the doctor, but my mommy and daddy went with me and I got to go to San Francisco. I got to take Mr. Floppy with me and the nurse gave me Dottie. She is a special bear that shows me the places where I can have my shots.

It started when my mommy and daddy noticed that I was very thirsty at night and I had started to wet the bed. One day, my daddy said that in order for me to have a drink I needed to take a test for him, so I let him stick my finger and test my blood. It was 384 (my daddy has had type 1 diabetes since he was 11 years old). I went to see my family doctor the next morning at that time it was 146 so my doctor had me take more test, which meant I had to go pee pee in a cup and they had to take blood from my arm. It was very scary, but it only hurt a little.

The next morning my mommy got the call from the doctor and he said that I did have diabetes and that I needed to be seen by one of the special doctors at UCSF. Within a couple days I was up in San Francisco, CA visiting the doctor. The doctor and nurse were very nice and they knew I was scared. They made me feel a lot better. I did not have to stay in the hospital because my diabetes was caught early enough, although my mommy did have to give me a shot. I have to get shots 2-4 times a day depending on my blood sugar, which I have tested 4 times a day.

It has now been 3 weeks since I was diagnosised with type 1 diabetes. I feel a lot better and I don't cry anymore when my mommy and daddy check my blood. I even help set up my monitor, but the shots still hurt a little. My mommy and daddy let me pick which finger I want tested (they also let me pick out special band-aids) and I get to pick the spot where I want my shots (I prefer my thighs or arms). I don't really miss the all the sweets and sodas because my mommy and I make special cookies and I even get a special cake for my birthday. I get special kool-aid and diet soda too.
