Back to Kids' Voices Erin

Hi. My name is Erin. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes five days after my 12th birthday. Now I am 13. When I was diagnosed, I had not been feeling well. I was drinking three times more that normal. I was also eating a lot and peed all the time. My mom was a diabetic nurse and knew what was wrong when she took me to her office to see my blood sugar. The finger poke scared me. I had never like shots, not knowing that for the rest of my life I would have to give them to myself. When the meter finally told me the reading, it was at 1000!

My mom was scared, and since it was a weekend nobody was in the office or the building, she rushed me over to children's hospital. When we got there, they didn't belive my mom and had to test me themselves. They did a blood test and finally figured out that she was right. They hooked up all these needles to me. I hated it. When we got home every thing seemed different and complicated. Now I use a MiniMed pump and it makes things a lot easier.

I love playing with my dog Bailey. I also play hockey, soccer, basketball, volleyball, softball, snow boarding, skiing and I love a lot of other sports. I would love to hear from anyone of any age with diabetes. You can e-mail me at

I love to get email. My email address is snowboarding_freek[@]

See you later,
