My Story by Skye
My name is Skye. I am 11 years old. I was diagnosed with diabetes in May 2004. I was in hospital for 4 days, I didn't like the (lumpy) food, but all the nurses were great!
I am getting on really well injecting myself twice a day and checking my blood sugar levels. Soon I am going on a school trip for a week to Wales with my class mates before I break-up for the summer holidays and soon I will be starting my secondary school.
I have gone off a lot of sweet foods, but my mum is buying me lots of sugar free things - which are ok. I like having regular snacks because I do get very hungry.
I was close to having my first Hypo the other day - when I came out of school - I felt unwell, tired and a headache - I checked my blood sugar and it was 4.3 (too low) so I quickly had something sweet to drink and some waffles to eat and I finally felt a lot better.
It isn't bad having Diabetes, because you still can eat a lot of the same food in moderation. If you get Diabetes just remember to keep your head up and smile because your parents are the ones which seem to do all the worrying!!!!
My Auntie also has type 1 Diabetes and when she was younger (more or less the same age as me) - she was diagnosed with it, so I knew a bit about it and often saw her inject herself.
