Hi. My name is Katelyn. I am 10 years old. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on September 16, 2005. I am home schooled now, but when I was in public school last year I was the only one in my school with diabetes. We had to teach the teachers, and the nurses, and everyone else how to manage my diabetes. Right now I am on a MiniMed insulin pump. I really like it. It is a lot better than shots. When I was diagnosed I was in the hospital for 3 days. I hated it. I am glad that there are other people to talk to that understand what I am going through. I would feel really sad if I didn't have anyone to talk to.
Besides my mom and my dad, I have a sister. I also have our dog Shiloh, our cat Meeka, our 5 guinea pigs, Angie, Kali, Star, Rhapsody, and Bubbles, our 2 hamsters Peanut and Bijou, and the rabbit Rocky Road. Our house is a total zoo. It is really cool to have so many pets. I am also in karate. I am a black belt. I was diagnosed with diabetes right in the middle of black belt candidate training. After I was out of the hospital I eventually tested and passed. Now I am a black belt, and my diabetes does not hold me back. I also like to play the violin, and I have been playing for 5 years.
I am 13 now, and I still wear an insulin pump. The only thing that has changed is that I now wear a CGMS (Continuous Glucose Monitoring System). I love it so much and I feel so uncomfortable without it. I definitely prefer my insulin pump and CGMS over shots.
I am still homeschooled, and I have been doing it for 3 years now. I have my dog, and my cat, but I also have some different pets now including 3 guinea pigs, a bunny, and my hamster. And yes, our house is still a total zoo. I still train in karate, and I am now a second degree black belt. I also continue to play the violin, and I have been doing it for 7 1/2 years now.
I would love to hear from you.
