My name is Chiara. I was diagnosed on March 12, 2007, at the age of six, shortly before my seventh birthday.
My mom knew something was wrong, but we don't have any diabetes in our family, so we didn't know what signs to look for. But I was SO thirsty all the time - I took a water bottle with me everywhere. I had tummy pain and leg cramps. My mom kept looking at my eyes because they looked "glassy" ... I think it was when I started eating more than my teenage brothers and was still always hungry that mom started to get worried ... and then I started getting really skinny - My mom made me get on the scales - I lost ten pounds - and mom took me to the doctor right away! My blood glucose was 40 mmol/l (720 mg/dl) - the doctor couldn't believe I was still going to school, and sort of acting okay. I had to go to the hospital that night. The attention and the nurses were a lot of fun, but I really didn't like my IV and all the blood tests.
I'm the only one in my elementary school with diabetes. I would really like to meet some other children that know what it's like having to take insulin and glucose tests all the time ... One good thing - I got out of the hospital right before Easter - all the other kids got regular chocolate, but the Easter bunny found me some sugar-free chocolate from Purdys - and it's the best!
If you want to email me I would really like to hear from you. You can write to my mom's email at
