Back to Kid' Voices Mary Elizabeth

My name is Mary Elizabeth and I am 13 years of age. At the young age of six, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. To me, diabetes is a type of "thing" that you have to deal with throughout your life. You have to take care of it when you are much older as well as when you are young.

It was just a sunny day and I was on the couch just relaxing, and I started getting really sick. At first, I thought it was a regular flu, and that was exactly what it was. Then, it started getting even worse. It went from the flu, to a stomach virus, and then it went to a whole new level. My dad just came from work and he saw me lying on the couch sick, and not responding quite right. Then, as soon as he saw me acting weird, he swept me off the couch and rushed me to Temple University Hospital. A couple of hours later, the doctors came into the room and told me I had diabetes. When the doctors first told me about the "thing," I thought I was going to die as soon as I heard about it. But when I first started to get the hang of it, I was like "ok." So, now that you know my life story, you can sit and think about it and type yours!
