Hi, My name is Nevaeh and I am 5 1/2. I live in New Mexico. I was diagnosed with diabetes on April 27, 2008. The signs I had were all there but my mom did not suspect anything because I always ate a lot and drank lots of water. I was always very active, racing everywhere I went, and never really sat still for long.
One day I was breathing funny and mom thought it was allergies. The next morning I was breathing worse so Mom and Dad took me to the hospital. The doctor knew right away that I was in DKA. Once they got me stabilized I had a two hour ambulance ride to Albuquerque Children's Hospital. I got sick in my stay there. I spent 19 days.
Now that I'm home I'm back to my active self and wearing out my puppy. After a few days of being home I started doing my own blood glucose checks. Now Mom says all I'll have to do is give my own shots. I say no way!
Some of my favorite things to do are going for walks with my puppy, swimming and working in my green house.
