My name is Lindsey. I'm 10 and 1/2 years old. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was one year old. My mom was concerned about me because I was acting very irritable and crying all the time. She knew something wasn't right, but we were sent home from the doctor's office and were told they couldn't find anything wrong. When my mom got home from the doctor's office, she decided to check my blood sugar (my mom has had type 1 since she was seven). To her shock, it was 486!! Thankfully, I didn't have to be hospitalized because my parents knew how to take care of diabetes. It was very difficult for my parents to stick my little fingers and to inject me, but they knew they didn't have a choice. So, I grew up not really knowing any other way of life except diabetes. Unfortunately, diabetes wasn't my only problem. I was diagnosed with autism when I was three years old. I had a lot of speech, occupational and behavioral therapy. It took me longer than other kids to talk and sometimes I do feel "different," but I'm doing great and just finished 4th grade and will be entering the 5th grade in September.
Diabetes can be annoying and makes me feel sad, but I also know that it makes me a stronger person I wish I could just take a break from diabetes. I can't believe it's been almost 10 years that I've had it. It makes me feel a little better knowing that someone else in my home has it, too...especially because it's my mom. She just knows what I'm going through. I would tell someone who has just diagnosed to hang in there and to know that having diabetes can be very difficult but also that, with patience and understanding, it can be managed. There are so many delicious, different foods available to people with diabetes. Using an insulin pump can also make life easier. I started using an insulin pump in January 2006 and that has made having diabetes a little easier. It gives me more independence and freedom. I use Deltec COZMO pump. I don't care for putting in new pump sites, but something that helps me in EMLA cream. We put it on for about 15 minutes before putting in a new site and it numbs the spot so it doesn't hurt.
My hobbies include playing the violin, reading (I LOVE books!), basketball, Girl Scouts, riding my bike, and swimming in the pool. I also LOVE Spongebob Squarepants and my favorite character is Squidward Tentacles. I have two beautiful labrador retrievers, a two year old female named Myra and a five month old chocolate female named Coco. There are like sisters because I don't have any siblings.
