Hi. My name is Courtney and I'm 13 years old from Ohio. I have had diabetes since Sept. 12, 2007. It's a real bummer, but I don't let it stop me from doing anything I want to do. I'm in the 7th grade and love to play sports. My favorite is softball but I also play basketball and volleyball. I live at home with my mom and dad and I'm an only child which really stinks sometimes. I love animals! I have two Saint Bernard dogs (Garth and Missi), a cat, fish, and a turtle. I love camping, riding my 4-wheeler and doing just about anything outside. I love hanging out with my friends, and I love to shop! Shopping is my hobby!
About two weeks after I started 6th grade which was my first year at the middle school/junior high was when I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. I really didn't know anything was wrong with me other than I was thirsty all the time and really tired. One day my my left work early and picked me up from school. I just thought maybe she took the day off, but she told me she was taking me to the doctor. I told her I felt fine, but she said she new something wasn't right and wanted to see what the doctor had to say. So, we went to the doctor and they did some blood work and called my house about 9:30 that night to talk to my mom. The next day we went back to the doctor then to the hospital where we practiced giving shots to oranges for the next two and half days. I was in the honeymoon phase for almost 8 months which was great because I only had to take one shot of Lantus a day. I'm still not on the pump because the thought of that kinda freaks me out, so I take about 4-5 shots a day and right now I'm ok with that.
So I would love to talk to other people who deal with this day to day like I do. You can email me at
