Hi, My name is Jacques and I am 10 1/2 years old. I am in Year 6, and I live in New Zealand. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes two months before my fourth birthday, and therefore I am in my seventh year with Diabetes. My mom was pregnant with my little sister at the time. She came home to find that I had a rash all over my body. We were concerned that it was German Measels as it is not good for the unborn baby.
About two weeks later they noticed that I was really tired, out of breath and losing a lot of weight. They knew something was up. Mom started to consider that it MIGHT be Diabetes when I woke her the 5th time during the night for water and downed it in seconds! They took me to the Paediatrician, who sent me for some blood works.
We received the news on a Saturday morning. According to them I was about to go into a coma, and needed to go to the Hospital urgently. Mom was really upset and crying a lot, because she felt very sorry for me.
I was admitted and had to stay in hospital for two weeks. Mom and Dad never left my side. One night Mom would sleep in my room with me, and the next night my Dad.
Today I am a healthy boy who loves sports. It does not stop me from doing what I like to do. Diabetes sometimes gets me down, but I need to remember that it is part of my life and part of who I am. Until there is a cure, I have to learn to take care of myself and take responsibility.
I would like to hear from other diabetics! You can email my mom at
