Which insulins do you or your child use?
Poll dates: January 15 - 22, 2014
Total Votes: 121Insulin users today have a great variety of products from which to choose. Fast-acting analogs (Humalog, NovoLog, and Apidra) and long-acting analogs (Lantus and Levemir) have changed the way many people use insulin. The use of Regular insulin among our readers has dropped off to one percent. NPH use has dropped too, from 32% in 2000 to just 9% today.

The following graphs illustrate the rapid increase in use of insulin analogs and the concurrent decline in the use of Regular and NPH.
Rapid Acting Insulin Use
The rise in the use of NovoLog has been particularly significant since it was introduced in 2002. Among users of rapid-acting insulin, NovoLog is used by almost two-thirds of our visitors (58%), while one-fifth (20%) use Humalog and 9% use Apidra.

As of January 2014, more CWD visitors report using Lantus than any other long acting insulin by a wide margin. This year, 73% of people who use long acting insulin report using Lantus. The use of NPH continues to decline and and now stands at just 9% for people who use long acting insulin. Levemir, new in 2005, is used by 18%. Given the clinical benefits of using Lantus or Levemir over NPH, it's no surprise to see the rapid decline in use of NPH. (See our page about Care Suggestions for citations to studies about NPH.)
