We all want a cure for type 1 diabetes. And we want the cure now. To show our support, we donate time and money to organizations that fund cure-related diabetes research. We participate in walks and bike-a-thons. We share our stories with friends and family members, and make videos imploring our elected officials to increase federal funding for diabetes research.
But all that research funding is of little value unless we, the community of people living with type 1 diabetes, participate in the research by getting involved in clinical trials. Without us, the best researchers with the brightest ideas cannot make progress. Without us, there can be no cure.
There are many opportunities to participate in clinical trials. At your next clinic visit, ask your diabetes team if there are any trials in your center or nearby. You can also read about research underway at the Diabetes Research Institute and through JDRF, two very well known organizations that are focused on type 1 diabetes. The US National Institutes of Health offers an extensive listing of type 1 related research at ClinicalTrials.gov. Finally, your entire family can participate in TrialNet:
If someone in your family has type 1 (autoimmune) diabetes, you and other family members are ten to fifteen times more likely to develop the disease. TrialNet, a federally funded research program, is offering free risk screening for the presence of autoantibodies that may appear years before type 1 diabetes develops. There are prevention trials in which you may be eligible to participate, if found to be at risk.
You are eligible to participate in this screening if you are:
