New Alliance Between LifeScan, Inc. And Animas Corporation Can Help Improve Diabetes Management

-- Advanced Blood Glucose Meter with Electronic Logbook Offered To Animas Insulin Pump Users At No Charge --

Milpitas, Calif. – October 2, 2003 – LifeScan, Inc., a leading manufacturer of blood glucose meters, and Animas Corporation, a leading manufacturer of insulin pumps, have partnered to help people with diabetes more effectively manage their blood sugar. Through this partnership, LifeScan is offering the OneTouch®UltraSmartTM Blood Glucose Monitoring System to Animas customers at no charge. The OneTouch UltraSmart System, combining an electronic logbook and meter in one, is available to new and existing patients using an Animas insulin pump, with trade-in of their current blood glucose monitor. This offer is only valid in the U.S. and is limited to one meter per Animas customer.

To take advantage of this offer, Animas insulin pump users are asked to contact Animas Corporation at 877 937-7867 (877 YES-PUMP) or This offer is void where prohibited by law.

"The Animas IR 1000 insulin pump and the OneTouch UltraSmart System is a powerful combination for easier, more effective diabetes management," said Dr. Katherine Crothall, CEO and President of Animas. "The IR 1000 is recognized worldwide for its performance, ease-of-use and reliability. The OneTouch®UltraSmartTM system, with its electronic logbook, simplifies the capture of key diabetes information and makes it easier to spot trends and potential problems with blood glucose levels that can impact insulin dosing."

The Animas IR 1000 insulin pump allows patients to take control of their diabetes without being tied to rigid schedules. By adjusting their insulin intake, patients are able to eat when they want, exercise at will, and enjoy a more normal diet without giving up good blood glucose control. Data from both the pump and the blood glucose meter give patients and their healthcare team a comprehensive overview of how well their diabetes is being controlled.

The LifeScan OneTouch UltraSmart System provides accurate blood glucose test results in just five seconds, lets patients enter key information at the touch of a few buttons, and then automatically organizes it into simple charts and graphs right on the screen—making it easy to spot trends and potential problems that might otherwise be overlooked.

"Our partnership with Animas will be beneficial to both patients and healthcare professionals," said Eric Compton, Vice President of Marketing at LifeScan. "Both companies share a common mission of improving the quality of life for people with diabetes."
