The O'Brien Family, Halfway Gardens, Vorna Valley, South Africa
May 9, 2002
Rufus arrived in South Africa with much excitement from the entire family.
May 10, 2002
Went with Mom to fetch Richard from school today, as he had a 'low' and was not feeling too well and needed to come home early.
May 11, 2002
Went shopping with the family and had my first horse ride on Richard's cousin's horse called 'Hot Spur.'
May 12, 2002
Went with Richard and his brother Robin to a rap concert at the church. Wow! It was rather deafening, but we all enjoyed dancing and jiving!
May 13, 2002
Watched Richard play tennis today at school. He has compulsory afternoon sport 4 times per week, as well as 2 periods of Physical Education during the morning per week. He plays tennis, soccer, cross-country, hockey and in summer does cricket and swimming as well as athletics. There definitely is no problem with him getting his healthy quota of exercise!
May 14, 2002
Visited the Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology when Richard had his appointments with the doctor and dietician.
May 15, 2002
Met Jen Whittall, Richard's Nurse Specialist and Diabetes Educator.
May 16, 2002
Richard took me to school today where I had my photograph taken with his whole class, to be entered into the official school magazine.
May 18, 2002
Richard decided to introduce me to his insulin injections today! He used an empty insulin pen to share with me how he feels when he has to inject himself. He is so brave to be doing all his testing and injecting himself.
May 21, 2002
I was able to comfort and console Richard today when he was feeling a little depressed. He sometimes feels overwhelmed by his diabetes and just needs to be held and comforted and reminded to take one day at a time.
May 22, 2002
Richard had his 'book day' at school where all the boys have to go dressed up. Richard went as a Minataur from the Greek myths and legends, and Robin went as one of the three blind mice. Watched Richard run his first 2km cross-country since he has been diagnosed. He stocked up on energy-giving glucose by eating a couple of pieces of Kit-Kat and ran the race like a star. Tomorrow is his school inter-house competition.
May 23, 2002
Again Richard ran the cross-country like an athlete!
May 24, 2002
Visited the skateboard park with Richard today. It was his friend's birthday party and Richard's mom remembered to take some 'legal' party eats for us to enjoy. It was awesome to see the boys whiz up and down all those high ramps on their skateboards.
May 27, 2002
We are sad to say "Goodbye Rufus," but we will catch up with you later. Enjoy!
