Van Niekerk Family, Pietermaritzburg South Africa
February 8, 2003 - Saturday
We collected Rufus at our first diabetic support group meeting for the year. I was very excited to have him. After the meeting we went out for supper at my favourite restaurant, "Tuskers". I had spare ribs and chips with a milk shake for a treat.
February 9, 2003 - Sunday
Today we went to Durban for the day to visit my Aunty. When we arrived my Aunt had a surprise for us - my Uncle and Aunty from Benoni were there. I showed them how I tested and injected Rufus while my Dad tested me before we sat down to eat our "braai".
February 10, 2003 - Monday
Today I took Rufus to school - "King's way Educentre" to show my friends in the Penguin class, Grade 0. All of my friends wanted to hold him, but Aunty Natalie, my teacher, said that he must sit on her desk so he can watch us doing our work till "newstime" when I would explain all about Rufus and what his job is. My Mom came to help me at "newstime", explaining what diabetes is and how I get tested and injected. While she was speaking I was showing my friend with the help of Rufus. My friends could not believe it and were very sympathetic with me because I am getting all the injections and they think I am very brave.
February 11, 2003 - Tuesday
Rufus came to school and sat on Aunty Natalie's desk where he watched us working very hard. In the afternoon we visited my best friend, Kelly, who was born a day after me. We had great fun with Rufus, dressing and undressing him with all his clothes. I also let Kelly give him his injection. Kelly had great fun thinking she was a nurse.
February 12, 2003 - Wednesday
My Mom and myself took Rufus to assembly to talk to the whole school about diabetes. The children and staff were very grateful because they know more about diabetes now. The rest of the day Rufus visited the other Grade 0 class, the Dolphins.
February 14, 2003 - Friday
Today Rufus just sat on Aunty Natalie's desk and watched us working. Every Friday we get together with our friends at someone's house. Tonight it is the turn of the Todd's. April is my friend who is 4 years old and her sister, Hanna, is only 2 years old. Roxanne was also there. She is 3 years. They enjoyed Rufus because they could dress him up with all of his own clothes and play doctor-doctor, with Jade, Roxanne's brother, as the doctor. Rufus has been injected, tested and bandaged up by all of us.
February 16, 2003 - Sunday
We went to "Crazy Duck" today. It is a farm where we can feed the animals like goats, pigs, sheep, rabbits, ducks and lots of different birds etc. There is also a lot of rehabilitated animals that were injured, like buck, crocodiles and donkeys. We had a picnic lunch there. I am very sad because it is the last night that Rufus is going to sleep with me in my bed, because he is going tomorrow to another diabetic child. Thank you Rufus for visiting me. I had a great time!
