Back to Rufus Rufus Visits the Piccotti Family

The Piccotti Family, Easton, Pennsylvania

July 31, 2001
Rufus arrived in Easton, Pennsylvania, at the Piccotti household today. Mommy and Paul couldn't wait to open the box and greet our visitor. One of the first things Paul noticed was Rufus' pump. We are thrilled Rufus can enjoy a less structured lifestyle with the pump. Paul introduced Rufus to his Rufus, who is not yet on a pump but might get one soon after seeing how it's made life easier for Paul and visiting Rufus. Actually, Paul's blood sugars have been much too high the last two days, and we're trying everything imaginable to fix the problem. Maybe Rufus's visit will be the solution. Paul got out a sleeping bag and pillow so the two Rufuses could sleep together. Good night, Rufus. See you in the morning.

Mommy checked Paul's blood sugars at 1 a.m. (72) and 3:30 a.m. (61). Yikes! Overcorrection? Paul has a 17-carb juice box (he does this in his sleep). He wakes up at 8 a.m. at 56. Yikes again. He eats two glucose tabs and breakfast. He's 152 by lunch, 326 at 4 p.m. (another correction), 197 at 6 p.m., 94 at 7:30 and 102 at 9 p.m. Maybe, just maybe, we're getting back to normal. Paul and Rufus spend the day at grandpop's while Mommy is at work. They chilled out watching TV. Tomorrow, a reporter is coming from the local newspaper, The (Easton) Express-Times. Mommy works there as the assistant editorial page editor. Yes, she has written editorials about diabetes, islet transplants and stem cell research!

Rufus is working like a charm. Paul's blood sugars are much better today. The newspaper reporter and photographer were here today. The interview went very well. The story will be in the newspaper next Thursday. We are hoping to contact Larry Holmes, former heavyweight boxing champ. He lives in Easton. We want Rufus to meet him. We also had to make a new pump for Rufus because the infusion set on the old one came off and there was no way to reattach the pump without making a new one.

We didn't hear from Larry Holmes. Oh, well. We are very busy today, getting ready for our trip to Ocean City, New Jersey!

We're back from the ocean and ready to ship off Rufus to the Harris family in Texas. Goodbye, Rufus. We had a great time!
