Rufus arrived today! My brother Spencer (6) and our neighbors Ally (6) and Nicholas (6) were here when he arrived. He was immediately introduced to Ruby, the dog Rudy, and a high blood sugar. After his long day of travel, he just wanted to be snuggled by me. I am so happy he is here to visit.

Rufus came to my first day of preschool. I didn't want all of those 3 and 4 years touching him, so I left him in my cubby with Ruby. Miss Diane took him outside with us and introduced him to my new friends. He even sang songs with us. I have been having high blood sugars because I have a cold, but Rufus has been feeling good.

Rufus got x-rayed today! We found out the tech is walking in Providence's Walk To Cure Diabetes. She was extra gentle with Rufus. His ankle was hurting, also. I wonder if he fell at soccer also?

Rufus and Ruby played together today while I was at school. I think Rufus took a box of raisins because we found the empty box and his blood sugar was a little high before supper.

It is Friday the 13th! Rufus went to our local JDRF office. He is going to be in our newsletter.
September 14-20, 2002
Rufus's allergies have been bothering him, so he has had to take it easy for a few days. He needs to rest up for the Walk To Cure Diabetes next week. On September 18th, Rufus accompanied Mom to the Joslin Clinic in Boston. She was meeting with the nutritionist, and they decided to give him a work up while he was there! Rufus even had his a1c done. (7.1! Good job Rufus) We are going to send Rufus to visit with the Marcello's. I am very sad to see him go but I know Felicia will take good care of him.

Rufus and I are going to be in the newspaper next week. He is going to be a celebrity in town. Thanks to Rufus's, help Mommy and Daddy are ready for the walk. He helped us pick out hats for our team, organize our walkers, and collect donations.

Rufus visits Felicia Marcello and family in Barrington, Rhode Island.
Hi, my name is Felicia and I am almost 7 years old. I was diagnosed in January 1998 just after my 2nd birthday. My daddy picked up Rufus today, so we had to wait for him to get home from work before we got to meet him and play with him. He met my whole family. Mom and sisters Gabriella and Abba (AKA Elizabeth); he even met our puppy Lilo. Anyway, we got ready for dinner and did our insulin. Mom did mine, and Gabriella and I did Rufus. Later we watched a movie and went to bed.

Today we did two birthday parties, a friend from school, her name is Mary. We went to her house for lunch and then to the movies. Mary made me a special goodie bag because she knows I have diabetes and cannot have a lot of candy. Later that day we celebrated Abba's 18th birthday.
September 22, 2002
Today we celebrated Gabriella's 5th birthday; we had a BIG party at the YMCA.
September 23, 2002
Back to school...Rufus hangs out with Ruby the bear until we get home. Then we play. I read stories and stuff like that.
September 24-27, 2002
We do pretty much the same thing all week (except Thursday and Friday-no homework!) Oops, I almost forgot we picked up my Aunt Jeanie at the airport on Thursday. She came all the way from Brunswick, Georgia, to walk with my team on Sunday in the Walk to Cure Diabetes at Roger Williams Park in Providence, RI.
September 28, 2002
We went to swimming lessons today. Since Rufus did not have a swim suit, he just watched. I love to swim.

WALK DAY! Today we will be returning Rufus to Abby so he can visit other families. He will also meet a lot of people at the walk today. I have really enjoyed having Rufus at my house and it will be very hard to let him go, because I really want him to stay. He has a team Felicia button so maybe he will never forget me.
Back at the Rao's
Rufus had a great day today. He met lots of people and told them about the things you need to do to keep healthy when you have diabetes. I was so happy to have him back even if it is only for a day. I missed him terribly while he was visiting the Marcello's. Rufus rode all 5K in a stroller. Our walk in Providence was a huge success. We believe the Providence walk was able to raise $180,000 to help in the fight to cure diabetes. We had a beautiful fall day and maybe as many as 1,400 people came to help find a cure. Walk day is always our favorite day because we are able to meet all kinds of people living with diabetes. Even the Mayor of Providence. Congressman Patrick Kennedy came and promised to help us with our mission.
Rufus will be traveling on to Natick, Massachusetts, to visit with the Carberry family. Travel safely, Rufus, and thank you for coming to stay with us. We enjoyed having you. We are sending you with a shell from the "Ocean State" and with a Providence Walk to Cure Diabetes button to remember your visit to Rhode Island.
