Back to Rufus Rufus Visits the Germroth Family

The Germroth Family, Germany

Konstanz, the 23th of September

We live at the Lake of Constance in the most Southern part of Germany just beneath the Swiss Frontier and in direct neighborhood to Switzerland and Austria.

Rufus arrived here on Tuesday, the 11th of September, the day when the World Trade Center of New York was attacked by terrorists and totally destroyed. Therefore, under the impression of this event and the horrible pictures it was a bad day for all of us, and for Rufus as well. Sorry, Rufus, at the first day you came to visit us, we took a lot of time to watch the news at TV because we were really shocked and knew that the world would never the same since that day.

In the excitement of these days we cannot remember where we put the little booklet "Rufus comes home" which was enclosed to Rufus. After having read it for the first time to our daughter, it seems to be lost although it never left our house!

Anyway, our 7 year old daughter was very lucky to have Rufus with her and she was really impressed by the coloured patches on his body, where many children obviously had given injections to the diabetic bear.

Even more interesting than the little booklet enclosed was the Journal, where so many families already with diabetic children have put down their notes. By listening to Rufus' adventures she was informed about the daily life of other children with their diabetes.

Julia showed Rufus to all her friends and neighbors and explained the meaning of the patches on his body. With her best girl friend she also gave him an injection - unfortunately the poor bear was given two injections at the same time. So he needed a lot of carbohydrates afterwards - they asked if a bear preferred glucose or honey as fast acting carbohydrates.

At the following weekend, we took Rufus out to a small sightseeing-tour at the Lake of Constance. For September, the weather was already very stormy and of relatively low temperature and soon the palm trees will be put under a shelter for the nights with temperatures under 10 degrees C (around 50 F).

Afterwards Rufus had a visit to Heiko (the elder brother of Julia of the first marriage of her father) and his girl friend Conny.

Now Rufus starts for a new journey as the little ambassador for diabetic children, he is.

We wish him all the best on his way and are happy having shared some time with him.
