The LaRocca Family, Plantation, Florida

Today was the day that Rufus arrived. He got here just before Mikey got out of school. Mikey's sister Andrea opened the box because it was addressed to the LaRocca family. Mom brought him to school to show the class. I was so excited to see him! I ran from class to class showing all my teachers. I even saw Mr. Gullotta, the principal. He thought Rufus was fabulous. He was very impressed with all the places that Rufus had been. As soon as we got home we called Daddy to tell him about our surprise!

It's Mommy's birthday. Rufus was busy today playing Nintendo. He went and met our neighbor, Ellen Rappaport. Ellen couldn't believe what a fabulous idea Rufus was. She couldn't wait for him to meet her son and husband. That night we took Mommy out for dinner at Hops. Mikey and Rufus had steak and French fries. Boy was it yummy. We checked our blood sugar and bolused for the all the carbs. The biscuits were the best.

Today, Rufus had a busy day helping Mikey and Daddy change the tiles in the driveway. The bricks were very heavy and had to be carried to the back yard. We also went shopping with Mommy for batteries for her video camera. When we got back we were invited over the Rappaport's house for dinner and to watch the football game. It was my first football party. What a hit Rufus was. I met Michael and Gary, Ellen's son and husband. They loved Rufus as much as Mikey does.

Rufus went to school with Mikey and met Mrs. Alvarez and Mrs. Hlavsa. He got to see all the kids in the class. He also met Candy, the nurse in the clinic and Mrs. Kelsey, who was one of my last year's teachers, but is now in the clinic. They help Mikey every day to figure out my carbs and tell me how to bolus on my pump. Rufus also went that evening to my cub scout meeting. My mom read the story "Rufus comes Home" and got all the way to end. On the last line, she started to cry. Today was the anniversary of when I was diagnosed with diabetes. Exactly one year ago today. Mikey was so glad that Rufus was able to be there at this time.

Tonight was the kickoff reception for the families for the JDRF walk. He met lots of other families with diabetes. There were many people there that had never heard about Rufus' travels. We were so happy to have Rufus to show them.

We went to the west coast of Florida and went camping for the weekend in the RV. Rufus had a wonderful time fishing, going to the RV show in Tampa, swimming, and sitting by the fire. Nobody wanted to leave when it was time to go.

Rufus went to school again with Michael. Today he got to be in an orchestra during band. Michael plays the coronet. He also saw the police officers with the DARE dogs doing tricks. It was very exciting to see them perform.

Today, Rufus got to go to Occupational Therapy. They got to play on all the cool toys and ride the swing. They practiced writing and drawing.

We had to get up really early. We were on the road driving to Tampa where we dropped off the RV. We live 5 hours away, so it was a long drive. After we picked up the RV, we brought it back to Punta Gorda where it stays until we get to go camping again. Rufus, Mom, Michael, and Dad got to sleep in the RV one more night. Andrea stayed with Grandma because she had to sell Girl Scout Cookies.

Tonight was the Pack meeting with all the cub scouts in our Pack. My mom told the story of Rufus and all his travels. Michael passed him around for everyone to see and all the kids signed the cub scout neckerchief so that Rufus will take him on his travels around the world. Rufus will be leaving us very soon. Good-bye and we all will really miss you but we know that Rufus will make another child really happy.
