The Howey Family, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada

Rufus arrived and was very excited to get out of his box and see what James and Canada are all about. James' brother Ross were really thrilled to examine all the bits that came with Rufus. James loved the hello in the journal from Nicholas. James thought that it was cool that he has a pump just like him and a medical bracelet too. James wants Nicholas to know he plays hockey.
Rufus is at school today - Thursday, November 14, 2002. The kids in James' class got so excited about Rufus that they are all bringing their teddy bears tomorrow to meet Rufus. Cool.
The fun begins!
November 15, 2002
James and Rufus are at school. James brought Rufus home for lunch - hot dogs. Rufus wasn't too hungry. James was low (2.8) so he was really hungry. James and his brother Ross watched the new Star Wars movie with lunch. James' whole class brought in their teddy bears today. Evening - Rufus and the Howey's are out to dinner at a friend's house. We stayed out late. Everyone is tired.

Slept in! James and Rufus have good blood glucose numbers. We took our neighbour's dog Meika for a long walk in the forest. Then we had lunch and watched a movie with Rufus. James made Rufus a cozy bed. Mom and James made Rufus a book for his backpack. Ross had hockey and Rufus stayed home.
Monday, November 18, 2002
Rufus stayed home - James had his piano lesson, but preferred to leave Rufus at home.
Tuesday, November 19, 2002
James finished Rufus' little book for his backpack (in case he is bored).
Wednesday, November 20, 2002
Rufus got to go to Hamilton to see James' Grandma and Grandpa. James has high BG (must be car ride and all the granny's food).
Thursday, November 21, 2002
Rufus goes to school with James and Jack the dalmation dog. We bought Jack in Hamilton. James just loved him. One of those got to have it things. James' pump was freezing up - MiniMed sent us a new one today. Much better. James had his friend Justin over. Tomorrow Danielle comes to visit after school (I think they are coming to get more time with the bear).
November 25, 2002
We went to a bazaar and bought Rufus a little bear of his own for his comfort. Also, Rufus got a Canadian flag pin. He is wearing it proudly on his lapel of his overalls. Church on November 24 - Rufus stayed home. Shy apparently. On Saturday Mom and Dad went to Dad's Christmas party. Got a call part way thru - James had thrown up - home we go. He was fine. Must have been the excitement. We have switched to sil sets - they hurt more. Seem to last longer. Yippee. We are getting better absorption. Rufus has permission to stay for James' doctor's appointment on December 3. Should be fun.
November 30, 2002
We get a visit with Santa. See picture at end of our visit. James and Rufus got candy canes (oh well). James wants star wars toys for Christmas. Rufus wants a book about bears (so James says). Rufus had pizza (and bolused with James). Great blood sugars all round - must be all the exercise at the party. They ran and jumped on these inflatable toys all afternoon plus some skating.
December 3, 2002
James, Ross, Mom, and Dad all go to Hamilton to see James' diabetes team. James also visits with Poppa the train man. Rufus was new to our clinic. They had never heard or seen him before! James celebrated a good clinic visit with his traditional 1/2 popsicle (it was -2 degrees outside, should have planned a different tradition).
December 5, 2002
Newspaper took pictures of James and Rufus (and mom) today. He was on front page of two papers! We send Rufus today to Ohio! We will miss him. What a lot of fun Rufus has! Ross envies Rufus (Ross has never been out of Ontario - he is desperate to travel - move over Rufus - Ross wants in your box).
Colleen (mom to James age 6 dx'd at 15 months)
