Rufus arrived a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving 2001 at our home. I really didn't think that Evans would be as enthralled with this little guy as he apparently seemed. Rufus learned all the tricks for playing Gameboy Color, watched Evans at tennis lessons and sat patiently by while Evans had to practice the piano. We introduced Rufus to our church congregation who gave him a warm welcome. Evans swims everyday so Rufus enjoyed sitting poolside while Evans exercised.
For the Thanksgiving holidays, Rufus accompanied us to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas to visit Evans's grandmother. Rufus seemed particularly intrigued with the mountainous terrain of Hot Springs and really wanted to get a hot spring bath at Bath House Row, but our time was limited (and passing him off as a fraternal twin was questionable). Rufus even made an appearance at Evans' 4th grade class. Evans and I explained all about Rufus, his travels, and showed the class where he gets his shots. I was amazed at the barrage of intelligent and well thought out questions by the students. With a tearful goodbye, we packed up Rufus to make his journey to the next family. Since Rufus had slept with Evans every night, it was a little lonely for awhile. But to Evans's delight and surprise, a new Rufus and Ruby were waiting for him under the Christmas tree December 25th! We hope that all the children (and parents) will have as much fun with Rufus as the Dorroh Family did.
