The Riendeau Family, Brookline, New Hampshire
Wednesday, May 30th
Rufus comes to visit the Riendeau family in Brookline, New Hampshire. I had picked up Rufus from the Morris family in Nashua, New Hampshire that morning so I brought Rufus to work with me. I didn't have the heart to leave him in the van for the day.
I couldn't wait to get home and have Justine open the box. As soon as she did open the box he was immediately introduced to the rest of the family. Dad, Davey - brother, Webster - the 2 month old kitten and Fleabag - the other cat.
Thursday, May 31st
Rufus went to school with Justine to Brookline Elementary school to Mrs. Young's second grade classroom. He had a great time visiting and was on his best behavior. Mrs. Young even wrote a note in his traveling journal! He went to gym class with everyone and took the bus to the sitters after school. Thursday night was spent getting ready to go away for the weekend. Rufus and Justine's Blood sugar numbers have been right on target! Thanks to the pump!
Friday, June 1st
We went to school again and when I picked up Justine at 2 pm I took a picture of Rufus with the whole class. We were off to a Diabetes Care Givers weekend in Laconia New Hampshire up in the White Mountains. Normally the parents don't go to this weekend but Justine has been pumping for a month and I wanted her grandmother to learn how to do a site change and figure out the carb/insulin/bolus ratios so I was coming along for the weekend.
Rufus had a great time meeting all the other children who has diabetes on Friday night. He loved seeing Lake Winnepesauke and the White Mountains all around us from the resort we stayed at. Unfortunately it rained the rest of the weekend but we kept busy. Rufus didn't join the kids in the pool but sat by their meters so when they all came out to test and have a snack he was right there with them telling them how brave they are and how proud he is off all of them.
Sunday, June 3rd
In the morning we had a big breakfast buffet, packed up and headed home. We had a baby shower to go to for one of my friends that afternoon. Got home at lunch time, had a snack and off we went. He had fun watching the mom to be open all her presents but we over did it on the cake. I had to bolus a couple of times to get Justine's numbers back in range. Oh well!
Sunday night time to say goodbye to Rufus and get him ready for his trip to the Greene family in Rochester, New York. Justine didn't want Rufus to leave but she knows that he is in excellent hands as he travels the globe. Justine wrote in his journal about her diabetes, how long she has had it, when she was diagnosed and now being on the pump four years later.
Monday, June 4th
We carefully tucked Rufus up in his box after one last hug and off he went to the Post Office. I mailed him Priority so he should arrive on Wednesday to his next destination.
Happy Trails Rufus. We can't wait to read about your adventures as you travel to other children with diabetes. Come back and visit again!
Lynne - Mom; Steve - Dad; Justine, 9 years old, diagnosed 3/97; and Davey, 7 years old, non-D
