The Baldwin Family - Dean (dad), Tara (mom), Zac (brother, age 11) and Kalyn (age 8, dx Oct. 2000)

Rufus arrived in Maylene, Alabama after school today! Kalyn was so excited that he had finally arrived. We took him out of the box, and Kalyn gave him a great big hug! Rufus took a tour of our house and met Kalyn's Ruby bear and the other "stuffed" friends that live at our house. It was almost time for dinner. We checked blood sugars, counted the carbs in Kalyn and Rufus' dinner and put the insulin in with their pumps. Kalyn's pump looks just like Rufus' blue MiniMed 508! Kalyn will be getting the new MiniMed Paradigm pump in June. We hope Rufus will get a new one, too.

Kalyn's mom came in at 2:00am to check Kalyn's and Rufus' blood sugars. They were both a little high so she gave them a little insulin to bring it down. They woke up around 6:15am to get ready for Rufus' first day of school at Valley Elementary in Pelham, Alabama. He was so excited to go to second grade with Kalyn. All the children in the class were thrilled to see him. Rufus enjoyed all the cool lessons that Kalyn's teacher, Mrs. Madonia, does with the class. Mrs. Madonia has learned all about diabetes and how to help take care of Kalyn and her pump! So, she didn't mind taking care of Rufus for a few days too. Rufus goes to Second Grade!

Rufus loved school so much, he decided to go back! Kalyn brought in a book that she had at home about Rufus. Mrs. Madonia read the book to the class. This was a very exciting day for Kalyn and Rufus. A photographer from the Birmingham News came to school to take pictures of Kalyn and Rufus in their classroom. Then the reporter called to talk to Kalyn and her mom about Rufus. They told her all about Rufus and how he travels around the world to make people aware of diabetes, and how Rufus helps children with diabetes know that other people have it, too. After school, Kalyn and Rufus went to dance class. Rufus watched as Kalyn and the other girls did tap, ballet and jazz. They told Rufus that he would have to watch because they are getting ready for their recital in two weeks. They were both treated to McDonald's Happy Meals after dance. Kalyn's mom counted the carbs and they put the insulin in for their meals. Pumps are great!
Mrs. Madonia, Kalyn and Rufus are enjoying school! Mrs. Madonia can count carbs, figure insulin dosages and bring down high blood sugars with ease! She's the greatest!

Rufus was a little tired today so he decided to stay home from school. When Kalyn and her brother Zac came home from school, they got ready for Zac's baseball game. Rufus decided to go to the game. Rufus loves baseball! Rufus really wanted to play on the team, but they couldn't find a uniform that would fit him! Oh well, maybe next time, Rufus!

Kalyn and Rufus had another great day at school. They took a spelling test and both did very well. Kalyn's favorite subjects are math and science. Rufus is enjoying learning about plants in science class. The class is doing some cool experiments with plants! Hopefully, there will be some budding scientists in this class who might help find a cure for diabetes one day! Rufus got to meet a kindergarten student today at Valley who also has diabetes. Her name is Katherine. She was so happy to meet Rufus, too! Kalyn's mom is also a teacher at her school. Rufus got to spend some time in her classroom today, too. Rufus helped her teach the children more about diabetes.

Kalyn and Rufus decided to sleep a little late today. Luckily they both have insulin pumps so it's ok to do that! They finally woke up and enjoyed a bowl of cereal. Zac had another baseball game, but Rufus decided to stay home. After the game, we got ready for a birthday party that Kalyn was invited to. At the party, Rufus and Kalyn met another lady that has Type 1 diabetes. She also had an insulin pump so we all compared notes about pumping! We bounced in a space bounce, ate hot-dogs and cake. Kalyn's mom counted the carbs and told Kalyn and Rufus how much insulin to put in to cover the yummy treats. After the party everybody's blood sugars were fine! Jumping in the space bounce helped, too!

Today Kalyn and Rufus went to church at Helena United Methodist Church. After church, Rufus and Kalyn went shopping for flowers to plant in the yard with Kalyn's mom. Kalyn's dad and brother had ball practice. Rufus and Kalyn decided to do some art projects while Kalyn's mom worked in the yard. After dinner, Kalyn read Rufus one of her library books. They went to bed early because they knew that Monday was a school day!

These are the last few days we will have Rufus visiting with our family. Rufus went to school again. The children love him and are going to miss him when he goes on to visit the next family. All of the children think Kalyn is special because Rufus has come to visit her. Many of them have asked Kalyn why they can't take him home. Kalyn simply tells them it's because they don't have diabetes!

Rufus and Kalyn got up early to get ready for school. Their blood sugars were fine this morning. This week is PE week at school so the kids get to dress up as their favorite sports character and wear their favorite team colors to school. Kalyn wore her Alabama Crimson Tide colors to school yesterday. Her daddy and brother are both big Auburn Tiger fans. We all agreed that we love the Atlanta Braves! Rufus said he loves the Braves, too!

This is Rufus' last day, and we are all very sad. Kalyn's grandmother made Rufus a backpack so he could put all of his cool stuff inside. Kalyn decided to also give Rufus a picture of her walk team from the Walk To Cure Diabetes in Birmingham, Alabama. Kalyn's team was called Kicking It For Kalyn! Our family team raised about $7,000 to help find a cure for diabetes. Kalyn hopes that everyone will try to get involved in his or her communities to participate in the walk or get one started if you don't have one. We wrote a letter with Kalyn's picture on it and mailed it out to everyone we knew. Well, we hope Rufus has as much fun in Texas as he has had in Alabama. Good-bye Rufus. We love you and hope you come back to visit us again!
