Outsmarting Diabetes: A Dynamic Approach for Reducing the Effects of Insulin-Dependent Diabetes

Richard S. Beaser, M.D. with the staff at the Joslin Diabetes Center

From the world-renowned Joslin Diabetes Center and the coauthor of the million-copy seller, The Joslin Diabetes Manual, this book is based on the results of the ten-year Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) from the National Institutes of Health–which proved that intensive control, opposed to standard methods, greatly reduces the effects of diabetes and the risk of long-term complications.

Outsmarting Diabetes is all about intensive management of Type 1 diabetes. Its 247 pages are packed with clearly written, detailed explanations of why intensive management is important (it reduces the risk of complications) and how to tailor an intensive management program to your specific situation. Chapters cover multiple daily injections, insulin pumps, pregnancy, exercise, psychological concerns, and an excellent discussion of “when things go awry.” Appendices discuss how to implement a Regular and NPH insulin regimen (for those who struggle to afford insulin analogs) or pump therapy. If you have type 1 diabetes and want a reference to help you manage your diabetes, Outsmarting Diabetes is an excellent resource, though it is dated (from 1997).
