Diabetes Advocacy in the Post-Election US

Stewart Perry and George Huntley

What do people with diabetes need from the next round of health care reform and what is the political landscape to move the needle? This session will provide an overview of the Consensus Statement on Health Care Reform for People with Diabetes (download the PDF) generated by a collaboration of 12 national diabetes organizations during this summer. You will be encouraged to add your voice with the diabetes advocacy community to encourage Congress to take long overdue action.

George Huntley and Stewart Perry each have over 25 years of federal and state advocacy experience on behalf of people living with diabetes. They are both past national chairs of the board of the American Diabetes Association and current officers of the Diabetes Leadership Council (www.ndvlc.org), the Diabetes Patient Advocacy Coalition (www.diabetespac.org) as well as board members of Children with Diabetes.

Fun with Sports Central

Join a group of inspiring athletes with Type 1 diabetes, learn their stories, and get moving! At an in-person Children with Diabetes event, we'd usually head down to meet the team of athletes at Sports Central, but this time, they're coming to you! Expect to be up and moving around for 30 minutes during this session.

Living Healthy with Harold

During this session, we'll have the chance to get moving with Harold, and join in a group activity focused on nutrition and healthy eating! Harold is a United States National Master's Aerobic Champion and has been connecting with the youth at CWD events for years to make exercise and moving FUN! Expect to be moving for 20-30 minutes during this session. No special equipment needed! Just bring yourself, and space to move around. The second half of our session is focused on nutrition, each kid will bring a snack designed in a winter theme picture. For example, bananas as a body of a snowman with raisins as eyes and buttons. Kids will get a chance to share their plate of food, explain their creation and together we will explore what food groups they used and approximate the carb count of their plate.

Green Team + Orange Team

During this session, your youth will have the chance to connect with other green bracelets (those living with type 1 diabetes) and orange bracelets (those who love someone with type 1 diabetes!) The activities will provide the chance for conversations, questions, and learning with others who "get it."
